A bit odd that it takes a fling squirrel to help people get to know each other, but, somehow, in the context of this book, believable ( ) I found this book to be a perfect combination of silliness and odd characters with a treatise on the cynicism of young people. I found the story of a young cynic taking charge of a superhero squirrel to be fresh and original. While the author is not very subtle about giving Flora reasons to hope and to love, I cannot help but leave this book feeling wonderful. I especially loved the strange old woman who clearly acts the part of sage. This book has sweet illustrations that drew my five year old in, we read the book in two days. One of my favorite Newbery winners. This is the most Kate DiCamillo-ish book ever. Quirky, adorable, funny, and unexpected. It's about a squirrel who gets sucked into a vacuum cleaner and turns into a superhero! What?! Highly recommended for lovers of weirdness, challenging vocabulary, comics, and (of course) Kate DiCamillo. And now this has won the 2014 Newbery Medal! I'm surprised because it relies quite a bit on the illustrations, but I'm not surprised at all that Kate DiCamillo has another award to add to her collection. It's great to see the Newbery committee pick such a fun, strange book. Though DiCamillo is definitely a Newbery darling, Flora & Ulysses is definitely not a typical Newbery book. Rescuing a squirrel after an accident involving a vacuum cleaner, comic-reading cynic Flora Belle Buckman is astonished when the squirrel, Ulysses, demonstrates astonishing powers of strength and flight after being revived. Aucune description trouvée dans une bibliothèque |
