When the moon follows you home, and as a result the sun doesn't come up at all, what to do? This picture book is not quite as beautiful as Chris Van Allsberg's illustrations, but it's reminiscent of them. On a long car ride, the moon is visible, big and bright-- and it appears to follow the car home. But in the morning, it turns out that a house-sized moon is, indeed, glowing in the backyard. In the dark day, everyone in town (and neighboring towns) is sleepy and not very functional. Our narrator's family tries to hide moon in the yard, but when it also brings in the tides, something must be done. Can the narrator get the moon back in the sky? Yes, by reversing the process.
The sleeping streetings, the yawning townsfolk, and the moon itself are lyrically depicted. I feel like the story could be a bit stronger, but still a good book overall. ( )

I really enjoyed this book for many reasons. The main reason I enjoyed this book so much was for the illustrations. This book creates a dream like feeling while you’re reading it, and the illustrations are a big contribution to this. The moon is drawn so bright and vividly, and I think children would really enjoy the detail in the pictures. The writing is really engaging and dream like. It might be a good book to read to children before bed because the language create a tired dream like feeling for the reader. Even though the story feels a little serious, there is still a good amount of humor incorporated into the plot. The plot is well organized and easy to follow. This book would also be good to use in the classroom. The overall theme is a dreamlike day, and the message is the importance of being home. I really enjoyed this book. ( )

A surprisingly clever story in the vein of David Wiesner, with sweet illustrations and a gentler cadence.

The moon follows a girl home one day and hides in her backyard. What is a girl to do? She is to walk and play on the moon of course. The morning never comes and strange things began happening sleepy eyes, yawning mouths, and water in the back yard. She learns in school that the moon controls all kinds of things such as tides because of gravity. She knows that she must let the moon go so, she does. The little girl is still able to enjoy the bright and vibrant moon after it leaves her backyard, but now everyone can enjoy the moon’s beauty. This provides a valuable lesson that beauty is best appreciated if it is shared with others. The illustrations are beautifully done. Even though the colors used are dark in tone, there is so much vibrancy. This book is best used in the classroom when studying the cycles of the moon. ( )
