The beautiful ashes è un romanzo delle occasioni perse: poteva iniziare una nuova, divertente serie, mentre ci troviamo tra le mani la solita storia, che, per di più, non sa ancora a quale genere appartenere.

È vero che non ha senso essere troppo rigidi nell'assegnazione di un romanzo a un determinato genere, ma l'impressione avuta leggendo The beautiful ashes è che l'autrice abbia fatto un brutto mix tra un insta-love da Young Adult, un'ambientazione da paranormal romance e personaggi pseudo-ca***ti-e-pieni-di-problemi da New Adult. Una schifezza, non provate a rifarlo a casa!

Inoltre, i due protagonisti, Adrian e Ivy, sono una pallida, pallidissima imitazione di Bones e Cat della serie Night Huntress. Solo che, per quanto Ivy sbavi fin dal primo istante dietro a Adrian (anche se non ne avrebbe alcun motivo, ma va be'...), non si riesce a credere che ne valga la pena. L'idea che mi sono fatta di Adrian è: cogli**e! Non fa altro che crogiolarsi nell'autocommiserazione del suo infelice destino per tutto il romanzo, salvo nel finale, dove salta su e giù tutto contento perché forse s'è pianto addosso inutilmente. Veramente appassionante.

Dal canto suo, Ivy viene direttamente da una fede cieca nella fatina dei dentini. Infatti, nessuno la reputa abbastanza intelligente perché le si possa raccontare come stanno i fatti. E questo non succede solo per qualche capitolo (cosa che avrei pure potuto sopportare), ma per tutto il maledettissimo romanzo e con motivazioni che mi sono parse del tutto pretestuose.

Un altro elemento di disturbo è stata la costruzione del mondo fantastico: è fatta in maniera approssimativa e alcuni dettagli sono veramente assurdi. Per esempio, per evitare che i demoni cattivi li spiino, i nostri eroi devono distruggere gli specchi, che fanno da tramite tra il nostro mondo e quello dei demoni. Quindi il nostro baldo eroe, quando Ivy si reca in un bagno pubblico, distrugge lo specchio della suddetta toilette. Quando si dice che certe persone lasciano i bagni pubblici in uno stato pietoso...

In aggiunta a questa sciatteria, poi, nel corso di The beautiful ashes non si legge niente di nuovo: nessuno può davvero stupirsi per il comportamento di Ivy o Adrian. Abbiamo anche il deus ex machina che compare quando le cose si mettono troppo male e i nostri eroi (o l'autrice?) non sono capaci di trarsi d'impaccio. Una roba tristissima. ( )

Wow The Beautiful Ashes was a fantastic book to read, from page one I was hooked and it didn't take me long to finish it because I couldn't put it down.

Ivy is a strong character, she has what she thinks are hallucinations that is until goes searching for her missing sister and gets drawn into a vision and almost gets killed and a strange handsome man, Adrian, comes and saves her from these strange people. Things are not as they seem and there are other realms that demons live in and because of Ivy's lineage the demons want her dead.

This is a gripping book that is full of paranormal, fantasy, adventure and a romance that you think may never happen because of what is told of a destiny.

I am not going to say anything else, it is a must read and I loved it!

I have not read anything from Jeaniene Frost before this book but now I want to read all her books and I am really looking forward to the next book in the Broken Destiny series. ( )

Ivy is determined to rescue her sister. Even if that means going into the demon world.

In this demon world there is no sun. A dark premise, with humans as slaves. Or worse, as meat. Ivy and Adrian work well together as they try to find her sister and flirt a bit when they can. But it’s a dangerous world and not as simple to understand. I admired Ivy’s protective instincts to try to help anyone she could from harm.
I can’t wait as to find out what happens next. ( )

I really enjoy Frost’s writing. She always sucks me into the story and her characters are always relatable. I didn’t love this as much as her Night Huntress or Night Prince series but it was a thoroughly entertaining read that I devoured very quickly. ( )

Nope. Just nope. Methinks this read like an episode of "Supernatural"... A bad, romance-oriented one. ( )
