A collection of African American poems. Each is introduced with a short bio of the author and the context in which it was written. Every poem is illustrated. The book starts with poems from the 1700's until present day.

I can see these poems being used for middle school or high school. I love the poems that did not mention any words about slavery, blacks, or rights. But throughout the poem you knew that they were fighting for freedom. The students could write their own poem about conflict in their life.

I really enjoyed flipping through this book! There are over 30 poems written from African American authors. The authors are both male and female, but they come from a variety of time periods, from pre-Civil War, all the way up to modern poetry. There is definitely a strong theme of overcoming adversity, but not all of the poems explicitly talk about it. The compilation includes important authors like Langston Hughes, Maya Angelou, Richard Wright, Michael S. Harper, and more. The pieces chosen are very accessible to young readers and broaden perspectives to include those of African Americans throughout history. In addition, the illustrations are appropriate to the text and are the perfect supplement to the poems. Each poem also is notated with background information about the author, time period, or poem. The reader is able to enjoy a learning experience beyond the profound words of the author. The main theme of this poem compilation is the dignity and pride found in being an African American. ( )

A wonderful collection of poems by African Americans written between the late 1700's to the 21st century. Each poem comes with a brief biography of the author at the beginning. This collection really captures the essence of black culture in America throughout history. With themes such as slavery, racism, civil rights, and Christianity this book is both educational and inspirational.
