I like to accompany my daily walk with a fast-paced, suspense-filled book. Diann Mills book The Survivor, book 2 in the Crime Scene: Houston series, fit the bill nicely. I had read The Chase, book 1 in the series, some months back so was familiar with the main characters. While it is not necessary to read the first book to enjoy The Survivor, I recommend reading it in order to see the development of the characters’ relationship with each other and with God.

Kariss is contacted by crime victim, now counselor, Amy Garrett, about writing a novel to chronicle her ordeal and to help others face their fears. Kariss has vowed that she will not again put herself in harms way while researching a novel, but Amy’s story seems to have made the wrong people mad. Her relationship with Tigo Harris, an FBI agent, has ended, but when the story research and a high profile car bombing/murder intersect, they are put together again to discover who is threatening Kariss and his connection with Tigo’s case.

Mills has written a puzzling suspense novel well suited to the audiobook format. The reader did a good job of narration without intruding on the story. The characters are likable, although Kariss is a frustrating character. She wavers back and forth about her safety and her desire to defy the threats on her life. There is a romantic thread in the story as well and it develops very nicely.

All in all, I would recommend The Survivor in whatever format you may choose.

In The Survivor DiAnn Mills actually gives the reader two stories in one...and though it could be confusing, she manages to use this method to increase the tension, the drama and your adrenaline. I have so far not read book one in the series, The Chase, and yet I did not find it at all detrimental. When I do go back and read the first one, I will likely have some spaces filled that I was not aware of being empty. That is the trade mark of a good author, I believe. This is really an edge of your seat page turner, and I found it difficult to come back to the real world, or even to have time to breathe. The characters are human, complete with flaws and strengths, the evil believable, yet conquered. Though at time the story seems dark and forbidding, there is hope and light at the end of it. Not all of the people were loveable, but that gives the story a deeper context.
More and more I am thinking that things are not what they seem, and the things I see, remember or read, as in this novel, I will do so in the light of my own experiences, dreams and life. In case you are not sure, The Survivor has found a place on my Keeper Shelf!
I received this novel free from Thomas Nelson and Zondervan through their Booksneeze program in exchange for an honest review. A positive critique was not required. The opinions stated are my own. ( )

THE SURVIVOR by DiAnn Mills is an exciting inspirational suspense/mystery set in present day Houston,Texas. #2 in the "Crime Scene: Houston",but can be read as a stand alone. See, "The Chase". An edge of your seat suspense from the first page to the last. Follow, Kariss Walker, suspense author,Dr. Amy Garrett,a previous victim who wants her story told, and Tigo Harris,Special Agent on a journey of murder, danger, faith, healing, mystery, and love. Filled with suspense, and trouble. With dynamic characters,non-stop action, and a gut-wrenching plot you will not go wrong with "The Survivor". Ms. Mills is an excellent storyteller who pulls the reader into her stories and holds them there page after page. I would recommend "The Survivor" to any reader who enjoys suspense, mystery and romance. While, this is an inspirational title,it is not a "preachy" read. I enjoy Ms. Mills stories and this was not a disappointment. If you have never read one of her stories I would recommend you pick this one up you will not regret reading "The Survivor". Received for and honest review from the publisher.

Title: The Survivor
Author: DiAnn Mills
Pages: 384
Year: 2013
Publisher: Zondervan
The Survivor is the second novel of The Crime Scene: Houston Series and it was an awfully tense and inspiring story. The Chase is the groundwork for the series. While I hadn’t read the first story, it wasn’t hard to become enraptured with the characters, the multitude of themes as well as the suspense that comes from reading a crime-fighting novel. After I read the last page, I then read a special note from the author to the readers regarding the contents, but I won’t ruin it for you by revealing what DiAnn Mills wrote.
Basically, the biggest and most difficult theme the author has Tigo, an FBI agent, wrestle with is how evil things happen if God is real and good. The support, honesty and prayers from some of his coworkers who believe in God as well as Kariss, his ex-girlfriend, cause him to begin to understand with eyes of faith instead of his cynical questioning mind. Kariss used to work as a news reporter before becoming a successful writer of fiction. Now someone has contacted her to write her story in the form of a novel though what the reason for doing so isn’t forthcoming from the doctor who has asked her to take on the project. On top of this, a prominent family becomes victims of a brutal crime when a car bomb goes off right outside the gate of their estate. Questions are mounting and answers are evasive as each new lead the FBI receives continually leads to a dead end.
With suspense mounting as each page turned, I couldn’t wait to see how this one was going to come to completion! There were a few times I thought I knew who the suspect was, and then the author brilliantly throws a curve into the plot that threw me off. There is so much more to the story that includes Tigo’s partner having to decide with his wife if they can care for his mother in-law’s last few months of life in their home. This particular sacrifice and decision was easy for me to connect too as our family had done that in the last couple of years.
Another aspect I enjoyed in the story is how the Lord is portrayed as the One who seeks us out not the other way around. DiAnn had her characters ask hard questions about God, prayer and faith while walking through their daily lives; it makes the tale more lifelike to readers. Whether someone is or has been a fan of DiAnn’s novels prior to this or not, I believe this one will catch the attention of new followers.
The weaving together of many aspects to solve a particular crime was interesting. When one sister with her newborn was endangered because of Kariss’ choice to write the novel despite threats, it was quite refreshing to read how the relationship handled the threat. Relationships of all types are best handled when wisdom is not only prayed for, but sought in and from the Word of God. There is so much for readers to enjoy and gain entertainment from this published work of fiction. I have ordered myself a copy of the first book in this series so I can read it and enjoy it while I wait in anticipation for perhaps the author to write another story in this series.
My rating is 5 stars.
