This book is about a student’s first day of school with a new teacher. The student’s teacher’s name is Ms. Green and he imagines her as a creature from “the black lagoon”. The student imagines Ms. Green as an alligator-esque monster who eats her students for lunch. This would be suitable for kinder-third grade students. This age group would be best because of the creative images and limited text per page. This book could also be suitable for students towards the end of the school year as they think about what their teacher for the next year would look like.

This is a book about a boy who is nervous for his first day of school. He goes to his classroom early and falls asleep without realizing it. He then dreams of an awful teacher who is depicted in the illustrations throughout the book. This would be a great would to read on the first day of school for students. The end of the book shows the boy waking up and realizing that his teacher is not a monster and is ready to help him learn.Though the pictures in the book are well designed, it would be hard to understand the plot of the story without having the text on the pages as well. In my opinion, this is a great book. I liked this book because of the authors' illustrations. For the teacher, she is being made out to look like a monster and the detail on her alligator-like skin is very realistic looking. It also follows along with the student being afraid of the teacher and expecting the worst of her. Also, the illustrations of the teacher breathing fire, making students head into a globe, and cutting a student in half for teaching fractions really shows us what kind of teacher the student is expecting. Another reason I liked this book was the plot, it flows fantastically. It starts with the student being nervous for school, we get into the suspensefulness of the things he thinks this scary teacher will do to him, and then finally him waking up for a nap realizing his teacher is actually this blonde haired pretty woman who will be a great teacher. I think the big idea of this book is to prepare the worst and hope for the best in an unknown situation. The main character thought his teacher was going to be this scary woman and freaked himself out when in reality it was just his overactive imagination playing tricks on him. ( )
