Jackie Mims Hopkins create a fun take on Chicken Little. Mary McBlicken the prairie chicken is hungry and in search of her breakfast when she hears rumbling, grumbling, and tumbling and makes a run for it in fear of a stampede nearby. She warns all her friends along the way and almost falls into the coyote's trap when Cowboy Stan and Reddog Dan comes to their rescue. The rumbling, tumbling, and grumbling grow louder and we discover the noises are coming from Mary McBlicken's stomach! The only answer is to get Chicken Little some food! This is a funny take on the story Chicken Little and I love the ending! The illustrations are vibrating colors and spread across the pages to make the text come to life. ( )

Prairie Chicken Little is convinced a stampede is coming. She runs off to warn Cowboy Stan and Red Dog Dan. Along the way, she meets some friends who join her in her feat. However, they are tricked by a sly coyote, and it's Cowboy Stan and Red Dog Dan who must come to the rescue. They soon find out it's no stampede, but Prairie Chicken Little's rumbling tummy.

Mary is a chicken who hears a "rumbling and a grumbling and a tumbling" and believes a stampede is headed her way. She goes and warns all of her friends that they need to leave because the stampede is coming. Along the way, they meet a coyote who tries to trick them into going into his den so he can eat them. The friends are then rescued by some of their other friends and they realize the "rumbling and a grumbling and a tumbling" they heard was Mary's stomach the whole time. This story is a twist on the classic Chicken Little tale. This version takes place in more modern times and has a completely different scene and vocabulary than the original tale. I am not entirely sure what the moral of this story is, but this book could be used to teach children not to trust strangers and to be aware of their surroundings. ( )

A great story for early elementary students to learn how to order events.

This story is about a chicken who hears a stampede coming. Concerned, she goes to tell all of her friends and warn them of the danger. After gathering a group of her friends, they meet a coyote named Slim who attempts to trap them and eat them. Just then, their friends chase off the coyote and rescue the group. They then realize the rumbling was her stomach all along.

If I'm being honest, I really don't know what the message or lesson in this book was supposed to be. I'm not entirely familiar with the story of chicken little, so maybe it's related to that? Maybe the message is that panic leads to trouble. I wasn't a huge fan of this book myself but I can see kids in a classroom enjoying it.
