Pete the Cat is a silly cat that everyone knows for his blue fur and beautiful watch. His big watch reads 12:00; Pete is ready for lunch. When Pete thinks about his lunch, he decides that a sandwich would be delicious. However, as he looks at the loaf of bread, yummy fish, tomato, and mayo, he thinks there is something missing. Pete wonders how he can make this sandwich even better for both himself and others later on. Pete adds an apple, crackers, a pickle, cheese, an egg, two hot dogs, a banana, a can of beans, and ice cream. However, now he has another problem. This sandwich is now far too big! Pete wonders and wonders what to do—until he has an idea! Pete can call all of his friends and invite them over for lunch. Pete is happy to share with his friends and teaches us that sharing is cool. Pete the Cat presents a world to children that they can relate to at school with dramatic play materials and the silliness of child-like humor. Pete the Cat also allows children to think of the people they care about the most and would share something as special as Pete’s sandwich with. Pete the Cat is an excellent role model for children as he adventures through life while learning school values such as sharing. In this story, children can relate to feeling small compared to objects in the world and understand the silliness of Pete’s story at the same time. When they see that Pete decides to share with all of his friends instead of keeping the sandwich all to himself, they realize that a box of toys or a bowl full of popcorn might be perfect to share with others. As a storybook, I believe that Pete the Cat gives children a sense of excitement, action, self-realization, and ability to identify with the creatures of the story (Pete). In addition, Pete the Cat’s story about his big lunch can be identified as a predictable book, giving children the ability to guess, read along with “He thought it was still too small,” build competence, and understand that books make sense in their own terms. Pete's big lunch is about Pete the cat being hungry and deciding to make a sandwich. No matter what he puts on the sandwich it just isn't big enough. After adding about 15 ingredients, Pete decides his sandwich is much too big. To solve his problem he calls all of his friends and they come over and all enjoy Pete's sandwich!
