Plus för världsbygget, feminismen och det faktum att boken klarar Bechdel-testet i ungefär varje kapitel. Minus för cliffhangerslutet. ( )

Star Cursed by Jessica Spotswood is the sequel to Born Wicked, a riveting tale about three witches who live in a world that persecutes them for being all things bad. Cate Cahill, sacrificed her love, the life she had planned, and joined the Sisterhood in New England to save everyone she holds dear, but in the end it’s still not enough. The prophecy revolves around three witches, sisters, who will bring back power to the witches. According to the Sisterhood, the Cahill sisters are the sisters in question, but the prophecy goes on to say that one of the sisters will kill the other and apparently the prophecy’s never wrong …

Star Cursed was beautifully written with a plot that’s quite addictive and frankly the gender-inequality theme is very in right now. Cate, Maura and Tess Cahill are learning about their powers and about the world, but all is not well as sibling rivalry and a battle for dominance comes into play. Honestly, it makes for an exciting neo-gothic type of read.

I liked Star Cursed for the most part. Of course, there were some problems I had in regards to the editing: for one Spotswood used the phrase: “I daresay” so many times in the second half of the book that it became a bit annoying. For people who don’t read too closely it won’t be a problem, for others who have a grammar Nazi hitching a ride on their shoulders, you’ll probably have nightmares where the devil says: “I daresay” more times than you’d like. Otherwise though, Star Cursed wasn’t too shabby and I can’t wait for the third book in the trilogy(?).

Sister’s Fate (Book #3) will be released soon (August 14th, 2014) in the US, so if you’re in the mood to get your witch hat on and follow this story, now’s the time to get your hands on Born Wicked and Star Cursed. Personally, I can’t wait for Book #3 to release. I just hope that all the loose ends are tied off …

This book certainly picked up the pace more than the first one did. I found the pickup spot a little jarring, actually.

This part of the trilogy has me feeling more for the burden Cate has placed upon herself, and the sacrifices she's made. Maura, is definitely my least favorite character, especially with all her petty jealousy, deception, and malice. She's power hungry, and corrupted. Tess is still sweet, though not so innocent anymore, given her situation. I can't say much or I'll give things away, but I still think she's my favorite of the three.

There are many secrets, and some betrayals in this book. We finally learn a bit more about Cate's family and her mother, although not much. The alternate history setting is still a bit unusual to read, but intriguing.

A lot of the story feels like set up for the third book, and while it moves fast, it did get a bit repetitive.

The last scene while not completely unexpected, had me angry for Cate. It's going to be quite the journey to the end of this war the Cahill sisters are fighting and I am interested to see how it ends. ( )
