"Art and design take center stage in this carefully crafted, elegant, artisanal book. This stunning autobiographical art book recounts self-taught artist Tejubehan's journey from an impoverished childhood in rural India, through her family's efforts to improve their lot in a tent city in Mumbai, and into her adulthood, when she lived as a singer and artist with her husband. The direct, unadorned text has an immediacy that reveals its roots as an orally narrated life story... As a physical artifact, it draws attention to its creation with stiff pages and fragrant, tactile inks... A unique offering that presents readers with arresting artwork and a compelling life story."Starred Review,Kirkus Reviews "Self-taught artist Tejubehan weaves a partly autobiographical, partly escapist, whimsically illustrated tale of a woman trapped between unimaginable poverty and a wildly imaginative inner world in a patriarchal society." - Maria Popova for the New York Public Library bookstore "...more exquisite and born out of a more moving personal story than just about any book I've come across."Brainpickings.org "Perfect for anyone interested in printmaking, and would make an extra-special gift for the budding feminist in your family."Nashville Scene A large-format, silk-screened, hand-printed masterpiece. Beautiful story, stunning art. My only complaint is how short it was. I want to read more! ( )

Purchased this as a gift for a friend but just had to read it first. So very glad I did. And now it's on my personal wishlist as well. ( )

I continue to like the handmade books published by Tara Books in India. My newest is 'Drawing from the City' by Tejubehan. In a poetic illustrated story, she tells of her journey from poverty and restriction to the discovery of herself as an artist, with many ports of life along the way. The ending is open as if maybe her journey has just begun. ( )
