There is something rather disquieting about Sallie Declan, a young American in London, and it is not just her obsession with Henry James's The Turn of the Screw, the subject of her PhD thesis. There is her decision, almost casually taken, to leave her studies for a temporary job as a nanny in a large country house. She seems to display astonishing naivety as she build a fantasy about her emotional future there. Surely she can see it is all delusion? But a progressively darker reality unfolds as we are led inexorably towards a terrible and shocking climax.… (plus d'informations)

This story really disturbed me and haunted me, but as an insight into obsession this is a superb story and very well written. Sallie is an interesting character and I don't want to give too much of the story away, but you really get drawn into her world and her reactions to it. ( )

Intense read. The narrative grabs you right away and makes the narrator seem sympathetic, if a little neurotic, at first, then, as the layers of deception (or unintentional white lies) fall away, you realize how clever the author has manipulated truth, reality, and what we can believe.

This was a great little book! Under 200 pages long, but engrossing and enjoyable. Based around the Henry James novel 'The Turn of the Screw', but set in modern day England. I liked the way the author got right into the young female narrator's head, with an interesting finale.
Recommended. ( )
