DNF.
Loved the world-building but couldn't stand the level of angst in the main characters. They are almost neurotic. *sigh*

The Review:

Cover art is one of the forces that will draw me to a book and encourage me to flip it over the read the back cover. This cover hit all the right notes for me including a drop dead handsome male, a sinister deadly weapon that glows and a city that must be in peril. This cover art cemented my vision of our amazing fallen angel, Luniel or Lune. He is someone you want on your side because he is going to finish his enemies with no mercy.

What about our heroine Dr. Morgan Sterling? This is a woman of science that has a brutal past and only believes what she can see, smell, touch, taste and feel, plus she even questions all of that information. There is just something about Morgan that I found hard to comprehend. She has the makings of a wonderful heroine but I just couldn’t get into her head. Her character makes so many assumptions, challenges about everything and yet doesn’t even rely on her passion for science to make the right decisions. Unfortunately, she didn’t live up to my expectations for this book and sadly, she never lives up to her own expectations either.

The world that Ms. Hayes has created is unique in that we are given a world that most of us have seen via television or big blockbuster movies or visited the city streets ourselves in Manhatten but we are unsure the time period that has passed since our present to the time that this story is set. I found this to be a gripping way of engaging me in the story straight away. I have walked those streets in New York City when I was a teenager and remember the wonder of the city.

The cataclysmic event that has brought Lune and Morgan together is the death of an angel that was the protector of one of the vials that contains God’s wrath and Lune’s brother. This is a different twist on evil that our heroes must fight because one of the two vials already released on the Earth has caused a zombie plague to break out. Morgan must struggle between her scientific/doctor mind looking for a cure for all those infected and the realization that a bigger evil is out there and must be stopped no matter the cost.

This story had promise and good storytelling and yet I have come away feeling “Meh”. It reminds me of listening to a song that you know being sung by someone else but they are singing it in a different key. The words are the same and the notes are right but it doesn’t resonate like the other version. It doesn’t reach down and grab you and lead you on a ride until the last note has drifted away.

Final thoughts, I think the series has promise and I just hope that Redemption, book 2, will take it to the next level.

FTC Advisory: Flux provided me with a copy of Foxfire. No goody bags, sponsorships, “material connections,” or bribes were exchanged for my review. ( )
