I did not expect to like this novel as much as I did. It was like reading a legend that teaches a moral story. Ana had so many loves in her life but she had to learn to control herself in order to lead her people onward into the future. Each character offered Ana a chance to gain wisdom. ( )

Windflower by Nick Bantock was a delightful book to hold…thick illustrated pages that just felt good to my fingers as I flipped them. The fairy tale was charming and “light” - a nice detour from what I’ve been reading…a bit of a literary palate cleanser.

He’s the author of the better known Griffin and Sabine series. ( )

OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I do not recall who reviewed this last month, but I whole heartedly Thank-you!

I "get it"......it's all there really is to life & spirituality when you follow the path Creator has set down for your soul...................

Ana is a young woman of the Capolan Tribe who has "settled" and is now about to marry Marco the landowners son. The Tribe were once connected to the greatest power element the wind, but both the Wind & the people have turned their backs on each other..... On the night of her wedding, the Winds come and create a huge storm and Ana flees the wedding and runs into the forest where she follows the path to freedom. ( )

The dark, but dreamlike nature of Bantock's collage art is always a beautiful addition to the stories that he tells. While his art is not as prominent in Windflower as in past books, it still enhances the lovely story of Ana, a Capolan woman who must leave her once nomadic tribe (who have become stagnant in a valley) to learn the dance of her people. This dance alone, she is told, will re-connect her people with their old ways and guide them on their journey once more. From there, the story went in directions I wasn't expecting and by the end I was smiling from having read not only a delightful tale, but one with a strong and passionate female main character who ultimately finds the strength and confidence within herself to be a leader of her people. I can't think of anything more satisfying to read than that. (originally posted on powells.com) ( )

Well, this is a beautifully written and beautifully produced work (Chronicle Books, 2006, ISBN 0811843521). A lovely story, nicely presented. I did enjoy it, but it seems to be striving for deep spiritual meaning but doesn't seem to deliver. Perhaps I'm not getting it, or perhaps I'm misreading the purpose. Besides, I found the 'clues' to be far too obvious early on, spoiling the surprise in the denouement. I guess I'd say if 'feels' deeper than it really is.

So, from my experience, I'd say just enjoy a beautiful, warm, well written story and don't search for some deep inner truth as you read. In this manner, both the story and the presentation (with Bantock's mysterious but often unrelated illustrations/decorations on every page) are a delight.
