Some years back, bookseller Simon Meagor had given evidence in a manslaughter trial, evidence which helped to convict the suspect who, upon release from prison, killed himself. Now, the dead man’s daughter has come to Simon’s shop asking for a job, and before he knows it, Simon is entangled in her plans for revenge. But when the young woman disappears and is subsequently found dead, it is up to Chief Superintendent Wycliffe to sort out the truth amongst the suspicions of the townspeople, many of whom are inclined to blame Simon; and maybe Simon even blames himself…."Wycliffe and the Redhead" is the next-to-last of the Wycliffe series and it’s quite a good one. At least Wycliffe has finally gotten beyond calling 30+ year old women “girls” and he seems much more at ease with female police officers than in former books. There are a few red herrings here, and some plot points that go nowhere, but overall a fairly good story, competently told. ( ) [2010-05-08] I'd started this in March while I was away from home, but only got a chapter or two into it before failing to take it out of my suitcase when I got home. Finished it at off at the end of April. I made some brief comments after reading it four years ago, and find that my view of it has changed this time round. The coincidence I complained about works for me this time [2006-05-18] Another Wycliffe book. Not my favourite, as the resolution of one of the plot strands involved a coincidence that made my disbelief suspenders go twang, but I'd certainly re-read it. Nice treatment of the way families will close ranks and refuse to consider the possiblitiy that a member really did commit the crime they were accused of. aucune critique | ajouter une critique

The discovery of a body in a quarry creates a baffling case for Detective Superintendent Wycliffe Simon Meagor was a lonely middle-aged man. With a broken marriage behind him, his life was centred on his antiquarian bookshop. In his past was the memory of a murder trial where his evidence had resulted in the conviction of a man who had subsequently killed himself. Now, to his horror, the daughter of that man was applying for a job in his shop and, almost mesmerised by her, Simon found he was agreeing to her employment. Cleverly, over a period of time, Morwenna manipulated herself into his work, his life, and finally into his flat above the shop. And then she disappeared. When her body was discovered in a flooded quarry, at first suicide was considered. Morwenna was suffering from a fatal disease. But everything pointed to murder and, inevitably, suspicion fell on Simon Meagor. Wycliffe became increasingly disturbed by a case which grew more and more complicated as he explored many dark and murky secrets from the past. Aucune description trouvée dans une bibliothèque |
