This was an interesting story. I had never heard about the meeting of these two baseball players. This book could be used to discuss how very different people can still have shared experiences. This book could also be used to discuss discrimination.

Summary: "When Jackie Met Hank" is a biography about two famous baseball players who fought adversity to play professional baseball. The time leading up to the two's first meeting was very similar for each. Jackie was constantly discriminated for being black, while Hank was discriminated for being Jewish. The two had to learn the game of baseball on their own and try and find a team to play for. Hank joined the Detroit Tigers who eventually traded him to the Pittsburgh Pirates. Even then, he was still pestered for being Jewish. Jackie found luck in the Negro League, but that changed quickly. The president of the Brooklyn Dodgers, Branch Rickey, decided that he wanted Jackie to play for him. He did, and Jackie and Hank finally met. They met on the field during a game, and despite fans heckling, became friends on the spot, forever changing the game of baseball.

Review: There is much to be said about "When Jackie Met Hank". This multicultural book is a biography about the two players' rise to success in baseball thanks to their inability to give up. There were moments while reading this story that I felt like there would be never be hope for Jackie or Hank. Thanks to the help of the Dodgers and Hank's practical mindedness, the two were able to meet each other and form a friendship. The book is very well written and includes a section in the back with more information on the two baseball players. This is a great sports/multicultural selection! ( )

This book depicts the struggles of two famous athletes that fought different battles and were considered heroes. These two men broke the barriers of race and religion in the all-American sport of baseball, and became lifelong legends during their long battle.
