A collection of new short stories featuring the great detective and his loyal sidekick Dr Watson, it mimics very well the tone and atmosphere of the originals, even down to the outrageous coincidences and more than a hint of preposterousness. The author displays her knowledge of all matters Sherlock Holmes by cross-referencing previous cases in footnotes by the (fictitious) editor of these case histories.
The majority of the cases deal with rather trifling matters and are not terribly memorable, while the last two stories mark a step up in intensity and emotional investment but are not entirely satisfactory; 'The Case of the Missing Belle Fille' in particular leaves an important question unanswered. In all, the stories are mildly diverting, and I don't think I will seek out any of the other volumes of new Sherlock Holmes stories by this author - one for the die-hard fans and completists, in my opinion. A reasonable collection of seven new Sherlock Holmes stories. A number of them deal with quite banal crimes, though the collection improved as it went on and the last two, the Missing Belle Fille and the Watchful Waiter I thought were particularly strong. The depiction of Holmes and Watson was I thought pretty authentic. ( )

Although some of you may already know how the collections of the hitherto unpublished Sherlock Holmes stories came into the possession of myself and my late uncle, for those of you unfamiliar with the details, I will recount them as briefly as possible.
