#16 in the popular and exciting science fiction Liaden Universe®.  A man without a past caught between powerful Clan Korval and secretive kompani. Stirring SF adventure from master storytellers Sharon Lee and Steve Miller--#16 in the award-winning Liaden Universe® saga. Space ships, action, adventure--all tied together with a strong dollop of romance and clan intrigue - make this a compelling series for a wide range of readers, from romance to military SF lovers. The kompani sees none as an enemy, and yet few as friend. The kompani exists in many places, living quietly in the shadows, thriving off the bounty that others have no wit to secure, nor skill to defend. Their private history is unwritten; their recall rooted in dance and dream. The humans of Clan Korval is in many ways the opposite of the kompani.  The interstellar trading clan is wealthy in enemies, fortunate in friends. Korval protects itself with vigor, and teaches even its youngest children the art of war. And when representatives of Clan Korval arrive on the planet Surebleak where the kompani has lived secret and aloof, it seems to the kompani that they are borne by the very winds of change. Change can be a boon for in change lies opportunity. But the arrival of Clan Korval, establishing itself upon Surebleak with its friends, its enemies, and, most of all, its plans may bring catastrophe, changing the culture and the kompani, forever. In this time of change, the lives of three people intersect -- Kezzi, apprentice to the kompani's grandmother; Syl Vor, Clan Korval's youngest warri∨ and Rys, a man without a world, or a past. Necessity's Child is a standalone adventure in the popular and exciting Liaden Universe® About Necessity's Child:"Compelling and wondrous, as sharp and graceful as Damascus steel, Necessity's Child is a terrific addition to Lee & Miller's addictive series."--#1 New York Times best seller, Patricia Briggs About the Liaden Universe® series: "Every now and then you come across an author, or in this case, a pair, who write exactly what you want to read, the characters and personalities that make you enjoy meeting them. . . . I rarely rave on and on about stories, but I am devoted to Lee and Miller novels and stories." --Anne McCaffrey "These authors consistently deliver stories with a rich, textured setting, intricate plotting, and vivid, interesting characters from fully-realized cultures, both human and alien, and each book gets better."  -Elizabeth Moon "[A] recommended, powerful pick. . .a fast-paced military and political thriller."--Midwest Book Review on Ghost Ship "[D]elightful stories of adventure and romance set in a far future. . .space opera milieu. It's all a rather heady mix of Gordon R. Dickson, the Forsythe Saga, and Victoria Holt, with Lee and Millier's own unique touches making it all sparkle and sizzle.  Anyone whose taste runs toward SF in the true romantic tradition can't help but like the Liaden Universe."--Analog "[T]he many fans of the Liad universe will welcome the latest...continuing young pilot Theo Waitley's adventures." - Booklist on Saltation "[A]ficionados of intelligent space opera will be thoroughly entertained. . .[T]he authors' craftsmanship is top-notch." -Publishers Weekly on Lee and Miller's popular Liaden® thriller, I Dare… (plus d'informations)

I very much enjoyed this entry in the Liaden series which focused on young Syl Vor yos'Galen (Nova's son) and his adjustment to life on Surebleak. ( )

Lee, Sharon, and Steve Miller. Necessity’s Child. E-book ed., Baen, 2013. Liaden Universe 17.
One advantage to writing a long series of space operas in the same universe is that you can swap genres from time to time. Lee and Miller do not play this game as often as Lois McMaster Bujold does in the Vorkosigan saga, but they often move seamlessly from military SF to romance to planetary adventure and spy thrillers. Necessity’s Child, for example, blends two children’s coming-of-age stories with an espionage drama. Clan Korval has moved to the wintery planet Surebleak. They are still in conflict with other clans and act as “bosses” to the native Terran population. Syl Vor is a nine-year-old scion of Korval. When he moves to the city to go to school, he meets Kezzi, a Terran girl learning to use cards to tell fortunes for gullible off-worlders. Her family has taken in Rys, a badly hurt Field Agent for the Department of the Interior that is planning an operation against Korval. Lee and Miller do an excellent job of world-building, creating several engaging minor characters with distinct voices. 4 stars. ( )

A wonderful addition to the Liaden universe. A new race is added, the kompania of the Betel, kind of a reworking of gypsies. The main storyline is going on in the back ground. This story is kind of meanwhile, back at the ranch... The main characters here are a young boy of Korval at loose ends on Surebleak, one of the kompania, and an agent of change who is suffering from amnesia. I loved serious little Syl Vor, Nova's son. He was wonderfully written as a lonely little boy who was too serious for his age. And the poor agent of change who of course had been drafted into the program against his will, as we know by now many are, was a lovely character who couldn't remember why he was afraid of Dragons.

If you're a fan of the Liaden stories, you'll love this one. No slow areas, lots of fun Liaden dialog and mannerisms.

If you haven't started this series yet, what the heck are you waiting for? I've been telling you for years. Come meet Korval already. ( )

All the action is on Surebleak and focuses on Nova's son Sly Vor and his newly adopted sister Kezzi and her people that live hidden on Surebleak. Mix in an very injured Liaden man with amnesia taken in by Kezzi's people the kompani and trouble will bubble to the surface of the city. Change is coming to city with new rules and schooling for kids as well and not everyone likes what is happening. As Rys heals, he slowly remembers things about his past and it seems his past is trying to get in touch with him as well. This gels quickly at the end bringing the two storylines together in a fast paced ending.

Inside the duct, it was hot and wet - nothing new there, thought Kezzi, shifting her weight carefully.
