Weepy the Dragon is a story about recognizing one’s own value. Weepy is bullied and runs away. Kids will practice empathy and/or sympathy for Weepy; the book may even make them sad. But as sad as it is, that’s how happy the ending is.
The illustrations are beautiful, too! ( )

The illustrations in this picture book are absolutely wonderful. Weepy, the dragon, is an endearing character. Jones effectively demonstrates the little dragon’s dilemma.

The theme is be yourself and find people who appreciate you as you are. The author, Hebert, effectively uses the structure of three to tell Weepy’s story.

There are a few spots where the language blogs down. It would benefit from some pruning. Excessive wordiness slows down the pace.

Children can identify with the main character and would care deeply for him. Since the dragon was repeatedly called a coward, I was hoping he would show courage in an unexpected way.

This is an enjoyable story (though not very original) which will generate good discussion. ( )

I received a free copy of this book from a LibraryThing member giveaway.

This is a great book for kids. It clearly portrayed the importance of being your own person and using your strengths to help others. Weepy the Dragon found the strength to go out on his own and find a community that was willing to accept him for who he was. The artwork is simple but enjoyable, and the vocabulary level is well pitched for a young audience. ( )

Loved the artwork in this book, big life lesson on being who you are and loving yourself for it. Great book to share with young children in the classroom or at home. ( )

Weepy the Dragon by J. J. Hebert introduces readers to Weepy, who was not a typical dragon. He had all the physical characteristics of a dragon- big teeth, scales on his body and a fire breathing snout. However, this was where the similarity to other dragons ended. He wasn't mean or scary. He used his ability to breathe fire only to provide light at night as he was afraid of the dark. This did not endear him to other dragons and they ridiculed him which reduced him to tears. Weepy decided to take charge of his life and began a quest to become the dragon others think he is supposed to be.
He didn't meet with success at first. He tried to appear fierce and mean, but he failed. His attempts brought more laughter at his expense. Unexpectedly and suddenly this gentle and sensitive dragon saves the day.
There is a lot to be learned from reading this book. It is made clear that is good to be yourself no matter how hard it may be. This is a beautifully written book. I feel that young children will enjoy it. I know that I did. (I read it twice). The illustrations are wonderful and give life to the characters.
I received this book free of charge from LibraryThing.com Early Reviewers and I give this review of my own free will. ( )
