The dwarfish, fetally-damaged yet brilliant Miles Vorkosigan has more than his share of troubles. Having recently escaped an assassination plot whose tool was a brainwashed clone of himself, Miles has set the clone, Mark, free for a new chance at life. But when he decides to let his clone brother assume his secret identity and lead the Dendarii Free Mercenary on an unauthorized mission to liberate other clones from the outlaw planet of Jackson's Whole, things start to get really messy. The mission goes awry, Miles's rescue attempt goes even more wrong, and Miles ends up killed and placed in cryogenic suspension for future resuscitation. Then, as if that weren't bad enough, the cryo-container is lost! Now it is up to the confused, disturbed Mark to either take Miles's place as heir of the Vorkosigan line or redeem himself by finding and saving Miles.… (plus d'informations)

In Mirror Dance, we really get to know Miles' clone-brother Mark, who was introduced briefly as an antagonist in Brothers in Arms. Here, though, much of the book is told from Mark's perspective, and we really get to know his motivations and struggles. Mark impersonates Miles to gain access to his military resources for his own causes, and when his plans inevitably go awry, Miles has to sweep in to fix everything. Unfortunately, Miles gets "killed" in the process, but the technology of the day would allow him to be revived if anyone could find the body. What follows is a political game of hide-and-seek where Mark and a revived Miles bounce around the various powers of the Jacksonian system trying to navigate a way to stay alive. Despite my reservations about Mark at first, he grew on me as a character and I really liked how he dealt with the situation in the end. ( )

Great military scifi, though this one is a little light on the military and more of a adventure thriller. As is obvious from the title, Miles Vorkosigan and his brother/clone, Mark Vorkosigan spend this books swapping roles, though at one point it is hinted that there may actually be another clone! Bad things happen when Mark tries to imitate Miles to take the mercenaries off on a secret mission that is important to him, with consequences for both he and Miles that he did not anticipate. Good characters and good action, a worthy addition to this classic series. ( )

I'm pretty sure I originally read this book in high school, when I first read most of the Vorkosigan books, but I remember disliking it at the time, and so didn't re-read it until now. But on re-read, it's one of my favorites, and I've come to really love Mark as a character. ( )

As with probably any book in the Vorkosigan Saga, although they are not officially numbered, reading other books informs this one. Having read them in the other of: [b:Shards of Honour|61903|Shards of Honour (Vorkosigan Saga, #1)|Lois McMaster Bujold|http://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1348840540s/61903.jpg|9673658], [b:Barrayar|61905|Barrayar (Vorkosigan Saga, #7)|Lois McMaster Bujold|http://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1348837985s/61905.jpg|3036422], [b:The Warrior's Apprentice|61906|The Warrior's Apprentice (Vorkosigan Saga, #2)|Lois McMaster Bujold|http://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1170597854s/61906.jpg|2792], [b:The Mountains Of Mourning|2684541|The Mountains Of Mourning|Lois McMaster Bujold|http://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1328024482s/2684541.jpg|2709863], [b:The Vor Game|68483|The Vor Game (Vorkosigan Saga, #6)|Lois McMaster Bujold|http://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1322571824s/68483.jpg|1129239], and [b:Brothers in Arms|296182|Brothers in Arms (Vorkosigan Saga, #5)|Lois McMaster Bujold|http://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1353351698s/296182.jpg|1808918], I would suggest reading at least The Warrior's Apprentice and Brothers in Arms--if not all of those titles!-- for background before reading Mirror Dance. Although Bujold attempts to write each book as standalone, I think having a good handle on Miles' background and the introduction of his brother, Mark, make the book much more meaningful. The other books give more depth to many of the other side characters, which is always a plus, but probably not strictly necessary to enjoy this book.

Background-knowledge preamble concluded. That said, this is probably my favorite of the series so far! It has elements that I liked from other books, but--as is often the case as writers gain experience--better executed. For instance, it has the shifting motivations and impossible-to-predict course of Shards of Honor (making both very difficult to summarize), and the drawing together of seemingly disparate parts of the story of The Vor Game. Unlike The Vor Game, however, Bujold does not spend half the book setting up all the pieces; they are set up along the way, but without sacrificing or delaying action.

This book also has more thematic depth than those previous. Some symbols are obvious, such as the mirror referenced in the title and many times throughout the book. However, Bujold makes that mirror multifaceted: it refers to appearance, to self-discovery, to relating to others, etc. . Others are more subtle, trickier to tease out, but ultimately satisfying in their exploration.

Finally, be warned that, like others of the Vorkosigan Saga, this volume makes reference to rape, sexual and psychological trauma, and has intense scenes of gore. These things are difficult to execute, but I don't find Bujold's use of them gratuitous. They are character-forming, they remain in the characters' memories, and aren't just used for shock value and tossed away. ( )
