For most of his life, Thomas had been lost in the darkness and ignorance of his ego. He lacked a sense of purpose and lived in a state of gloom. Pessimism and a deep distrust of others were his modus operandi. This is the story of how Thomas underwent a dramatic change in his way of thinking. His new awareness and understanding led to a more harmonious life, and he finally recognized that in order to enjoy and sustain a fulfilling life, he must have positive interactions with others and let his inner being, not his ego, control his actions. Overcoming the Enemy Within details examples of the higher awareness we all must achieve if we are to develop insight and save our crumbling society. We have a spiritual responsibility to work ethically and to treat others with respect and dignity. We can return to our spiritual nature by transcending our ignorance and the faulty beliefs that hinder our journey to Higher Consciousness. For when we achieve harmony of mind, we are united to all things, we lose the egos restrictions, and we gain access to the unlimited energy resources of the universe. Overcoming the Enemy Within is under a hundred pages, yet these books sometimes tend to give me the most trouble in reviewing. This book was difficult for me to review and I read this book once and then found myself rereading it again and again. Here the author Fernandez helps the reader to comprehend the harmony that is achievable through meditation, the right nutrition and by being grounded in the present. I clearly understood the views presented by Fernandez and how he explains the freedom one can achieve by being aware of our own self-created limitations which he considers fallacies of the ego.
The area most interesting for me is the information Fernandez presents on how higher consciousness can be achieved through discipline and determination for expanding the mind and it's creativity. Mind chatter keeps us from making the right choices and through meditation one can quiet the mind, eliminating biases and preconceived judgments. It is easy to understand how creativity would flow more easily once one tunes out the noise of the world and becomes present. A difficult task for many including myself but which is not impossible with a lot of discipline and hard work.
It all begins with the ego and Fernandez tells us that observing our own ego helps us to weaken it and it's control and power over our reactions. Meditation quiets the ego to help us find our inner being while increasing our awareness and focuses our minds helping us develop insight, appreciation and understanding while allowing us to view the beauty and unity in all and everything in our lives.
One concept Fernandez covers is a basic in regards to reaching our goals. We all know that visualizing our goals is a must in achieving them. But how many of us work at it and continue to clearly visualize that goal while also coordinating efforts and keeping our beliefs of achieving those goals positive. Life can be very difficult and we can certainly have the best effort in mind but distractions can cause us to go off track. Fernandez explains what one needs to do to accomplish this.
One topic that really hit home for me is in regards to analytical thoughts. In regards to one analyzing others and how our thinking is full of prejudicial assumptions and emotions. One can avoid doing this through intuitive thinking. By stepping back and being aware of our feelings before we speak or react to a situation and being present in the moment we are using our higher consciousness thinking. This is another concept I need much help with as I tend to get caught up in others emotions and feelings and unconsciously comparing past situations.
One fact many people fail to take into consideration is how our physical existence is a direct result of our thoughts, so consistently focusing on our thoughts allows us to become anything and everything we would like to be. As Fernandez explains this concept he also explains how God gave us the capacity to achieve our goals by giving us the capacity to control our thoughts. Our thoughts are responsible for our success and happiness as well as our failures and disappointments. But then again we must use discipline and determination as well as hard work to consistently keep our goals in vision as well as their successful outcome to succeed. ( )
