I didn't think the synopsis of this book described the tone very well. It wasn't really silly or weird, it was melancholy and sarcastic. Which I liked. ( ) Marston’s award-winning debut novel is a flat-out favourite of mine so far this year. There’s a woman named Margaret H. Atwood; a religious nutjob; a lovesick alien that only wants the best for Margaret; and a particularly Vonnegutian way of looking at the world. It all combines into a loveably weird misfit of a novel filled with odd angles, plot twists, perfect pitch, and seriously warped imagination. Plagued by a case of psoriasis, stuck in a boring job, and deserted by her cheating husband--life isn't looking too good to Margaret H. Atwood. And on top of it all, none of her pants fit anymore. On her hilarious journey to recovery, Margaret encounters hope in many different forms, from a dope-smoking senior citizen, a religious fanatic, a good lawyer, and a talking turtle--not to mention Christo, Jeanne-Claude, Warren Zevon, Neil Armstrong, and a yogi buried deep underground--to a love-sick alien who speaks in Donald Sutherland's voice. More than an irreverent joyride, this book is a sweet and tender look at the pain and indignity that comes with being an adult human and a sincere exploration of the limited range of remedies--art, love, religion, relentless optimism, and alien intervention.
