The incredible first part of the follow up to bestseller Wool. Donald Keene has been recruited by the government to design a shelter. He has been told that it is just protocol. That it won't really be used. That it is 'just-in-case'. It is underground. Over fifty years later Donald's design has been realised and the last remnants of mankind live in his silo. But no one can remember what life was like before. In fact, they're forced to forget. One simple pill erases a memory. And with it, any chance of hope.… (plus d'informations)

Really, really good. The back and forth in the timelines, building up to the killer ending. Loved it. Can't wait to start the next one today. ( )

Here was the curse: a person had to be in charge, had to guard the secrets. Some wouldn’t be able to. It was statistically predictable. He reminded himself that it was inevitable, the cards already shuffled, the game just waiting to play out.

Troy was tired of forgetting. He had decided to remember.

A Doctor to Troy ( )

To be honest, I read "Shift" before this book and 30 pages into it, I realized Hugh had imported much of this into the second book. So rather than read what I'd just read previously in "Shift (#2)" I decided I'd move to the next story instead. I love his narrative style and futuristic view though it's a bit scary and real in some ways. I'm addicted to Howey's storytelling and will read all the others now. ( )

I sped through the Wool Omnibus and immediate bought this one to read. First Shift takes a step back and looks at how the silos were first conceived of and formed. The story is told in shifting points-of-view: the first Donald, a junior Congressional Representative who gets tapped to work on a super secret project by his mentor; and the second Troy, a worker in Silo One who is woken out of cryosleep to take his sift being the leader of the Fifty Silos.

This book is haunting in its possibilities. It's not too out of the box to conceive of a situation arising that would lead to the creation of the silos. ( )
