I just love the work of Julie Flett. Her illustrations and simple nature based stories, that also focus on the Cree language are a joy to behold. Wild Berries focuses on a boy named Clarence and his grandmother as they forage wild berries in the woods. There, Clarence gets to meet ant, spider, and fox and explore the beautiful woodland landscape. This book is written in both English and Cree, in particular the n-dialect, also known as Swampy Cree from the Cumberland House area. The book also includes a recipe for making blueberry jam! ( )

This primary level book is about a grandma and little boy going out and picking berries. Each page has a different word that is translated which brings out the idea of culture and language which is really cool for students to experience and should be read ( )

I think this book was a really simple story about the relationship between grandma and grandchildren. I enjoyed this book for a couple reasons, one was because of the relationship that was formed and that we as readers saw between the two characters, and the second was because of the Native American vocabulary that was also included in the book, That gave the book the extra level of uniqueness and diversity it needed and leveled it up from good to great ( )

This was a short book between a child and their grandmother going to pick wild berries in the forest. There are words in the story for children to learn and even ways to pronounce them at the end of the story! Great read for age 4-7. ( )

A simple story of a boy and his grandma walking through the forest to pick wild berries, blueberries in this case. Early learners can follow along with the images and easy language. There is also an endnote referring to the pronunciation of the traditional words throughout the book. We can see the harmony between people and nature in the Native American culture through this beautiful story. Simple reading for elementary readers (1-5). ( )
