Like many of L'Engle's works of non-fiction, this book is a series of reflections. Written over about a year, the book is framed by reflections on the stories of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob and L'Engle's experiences as a juror on an assault case. Through these stories and others, L'Engle explores the themes of human imperfection and forgiveness.
Despite my lack of religious beliefs, I always enjoy reading L'Engle's non-fiction. She is not afraid to tackle difficult texts from the Bible, and she understands that saying that something is a story or myth does not mean that it is false or a lie. I appreciate this contrast to the media's image of religion as right-wing Biblical literalists.
