En lättläst ungdomsdystopi. Skönt med en LL-bok för ungdomar som inte handlar om 1. Kille på glid eller 2. Tjej med självskadebeteende, men lite väl tydlig sensmoral kan jag tycka. ( )

Jed seems to have it all, loyal friends, girlfriend of 2 years and a hot shot lawyer father. That all changes when he pushes his girlfriend out of the path of a car.
Jed wakes up after the accident not sure what is going on, that is until his mom hands him a mirror and he learns that he is now a Pale. his girlfriend made the decision to have him injected with what is known as the Lazarus Serum; which can bring you back to "life" if you happen to have the right blod type. Sadie, the girlfriend, knew that Jed had the right blood type and even though she knew becoming a Pale was not something he would want she decided to do it anyway.
Jed's father is an Afterlife lawyer, who takes everything from the Pales since they aren't really alive and can have no property. This new development in his son's "life" makes it really hard on him and he pushes Jed away. Jed's close friends and girlfriend no longer want anything to do with him and threaten him on his first day back at school.
The story is a great one and even though it is only 72 pages total, you get enough to make you want to keep reading and know more. ( )

Barrington Stoke reader - Interesting concept. A medicine has been invented that brings people back from the dead but the Lazarus serum only works with certain blood types. The result of this serum is the person appearing deathly white in skin, hair and eye colour. These people are abused and called Pales by people who are not the correct blood type. Jed and his friend Kyle pick on a Pale at their school and then Jed finds himself in an awkward situation when his girlfriend Sadie brings him back to life ...he has become the thing he hates.
Can be used for older readers as raises racism issue...what is inside versus outside appearance. ( )

I'm not sure how I feel about this one. I know it was written for reluctant readers, but I didn't get the teen appeal to the book. I like the premise of the story, but it could have just as easily been written as a book for tweens as for teens. There was really nothing to tell me it was for teens. Just didn't work for me there. It was a quick read and I think there are those that will like it, I just didn't feel it fit into my criteria for purchasing here. ( )

I battled between a 1-star and a 3. I landed on 3 for the premise.

This short book is about a world in which a serum has been developed to bring people back from the dead [only recently deceased/non-brutal deaths]. To qualify, you must have a specific blood type. The downside is, that once you are brought back, you are scum of the society. They are banished from the city and made to live in a slum neighborhood called "The Graveyard". All pigment leaves their body: white hair, white skin, white eyes, a sort of translucent ghostly appearance and they no longer require oxygen to breathe.

The premise of this book is so incredibly interesting to me, so it's a shame that it was so poorly executed. The writing was choppy and accompanied by childish sentence structure. It was hard to get lost in the story because, I fear that, no editor ever even glanced at the book before sending it off.

It had many grammar errors and even more spots where the space bar must have gotten stuck together - over and over and over.

You'd think that such a short book (listed here as 77 pages but I think it is more around ~40) would have received a closer eye by the publisher. This book was released in July 2012 and I can only hope that, since then, they have released a corrected edition.

All in all, the skill of the author's writing seemed questionable but the premise has great potential. I would've liked to see it a little bit longer and with more feeling. ( )
