First Holmes and Watson, then Nero and Archie, Now Leo and Serendipity--two detectives, two narrative voices, twice as much sleuthing and double the fun. First, imagine Katherine Hepburn at fourteen. Next, in your mind's eye, replay Humphrey Bogart, at his middle-aged best, as Sam Spade. The background material that Mr. Lochte includes with this edition goes a long way toward explaining why the story is as it is. Otherwise, why set a story in the 1980s?

Mr. Lochte also says that his book was initially rejected for being to longwinded. It was picked up by Arbor House and went on to great acclaim.

Well, I would have put it into the windy category too but that just goes to show you that tastes differ.

Brash Books has decided to release the Leo and Serendipity series in paperback and Kindle formats, beginning with Sleeping Dog and Laughing Dog (1988). Rapping Dog, a recent short story, has been released for Kindle.

Interesting private detective novel, in which the PI (bad-tempered, old) teams up with an adolescent California girl, in a search for her missing dog. The two key characters take turn as narrator. The device sometimes overwhelms the story, but it is an interesting read. ( )
