This book is about a woman named Minnie Evans. She was forty-three years old when she began to draw pictures based on her strange dreams and visions. She drew and painted giant birds, biblical figures, and many other weird and fascinating images. This is a book about Evans and how she over came the obstacles that she faced being an African American woman. The illustrations in this book are beautifully painted and amazing to look at. Some of them are abstract and the meanings of others are more clearly distinguished. It's an interesting story. ( )

Minnie Evans was a traveler in a strange land. No one could journey with her to the places she visited in nightly dreams and daily visions. But midway through her life, at the age of fourty-three, she became an artist.

Two days before Easter Sunday, 1935, she began to drawing on a scrap of paper bag she had used for a grocery list. Although she didn't understand the "funny things" she drew, she made another picture the next day. . . .

. . . Minnie seemed so driven that the Evans family feared she was going insane. They worried she would have to go to an asylum. In a fit of frustration, Julius took the drawings away from her. When Minnie couldn't make pictures, though, she got sick.

The images in her mind haunted her. "Those things got on me," she said. "No one knows. If I didn't paint, seem like I would die."
