This book was first published 15 years ago and was re-released in 2005 but the absence of mobile phones in the hands of these teenagers really dates the book. Basically it is one of a collection Stine wrote that are centered around a street called Fear Street where at least one of the characters in the novel lives. This is the story of a two girls Delia and Karina who are always competing and are currently dating the same boy without the other knowing until something terrible happens. I found the main character's obsession with her looks ( she is always applying lipstick and checking herself out in the mirror) meant that I couldn't really warm to her and when she proves to the police that she isn't a murderer because of the reverse lipstick print, well that just lost it for me completely ; I mean she's such an airhead and yet she's smarter than the police force! Oh please! Drivel and not worth the paper it's printed on - no wonder the book was free! aucune critique | ajouter une critique

Is it really not possible for Stine to write a teenage boy who's not some kind of sociopath? This is 'Fear Street', I know, but I'm missing the days when Cory Brooks' weird obsession with Anna was the worst thing I'd seen. This book is not about Cory, however. This book is about Vincent Milano and the two girls lucky enough to be strung along by him: Delia Easton and Karina Frye.
I guess I didn't realize it, but after a long absence from acknowledging time passing, it seems like all of the kids of Shadyside High graduated with Julie Carson and the others in 'The Confession'. There have been few to no appearances from old standby characters in the last few books. This is fine, I would, however, have liked them to be replaced with new standby characters, but everyone have been one-offs and I'm so far behind in reviews at this point I can tell you that this trend continues into book #101 (Fear Hall 2: Spookaloo Bugaloo).
The main conflict of this book, apart from who gets to allow dreamy Vincent Milano to molest them, is a competition to see who wins a prestigious scholarship. Delia NEEDS the scholarship to go to college, while the wealthy Karina just wants another win. This brought back vague memories of interviews during my senior year in high school for scholarships. We certainly didn't have talent shows attached to them, but that would have been more fun then answering personal questions about our families or pretending to know what career we wanted.
This had some nice turns to it, surprises, and nasty tricks, but it likely won't make my personal top-ten. Honorable mention must also be given to that cover.
