Fiction. Literature. Humor (Fiction.) HTML:

Besides the fact that their kids all attend the same fashionable Brooklyn Heights private school, Bess, Robin, Carla, and Alicia have little in common. Thrown together on the tony schoolâ??s Diversity Committee, the women impulsively turn their awkward first meeting into a boisterous game of poker. Instead of betting with chips or pocket change, however, they play for intimate secrets about their lives.

As the Diversity Commitee meetings become a highly anticipated monthly ritual, the new friends reveal more with each game. Picture-perfect housewife Bess struggles to relate to her surly teenage daughter and judgmental mother. Robin, a single mom, grapples with the truth concerning her childâ??s real father. Carla, an ambitious doctor, attempts to balance the colossal demands of her family with her dream of owning her own private practice. And to distract herself from her troubled marriage, shy copywriter Alicia fantasizes about an attractive younger colleague.

Putting all their cards on the table, the four women grow to rely on one another, bracing for one final showdown

When four unlikely women are put on a private school's parent diversity committee, each mother wonders what they have to offer. It isn't until the women start playing poker instead of creating meeting agendas that they start to reveal their true selves and discover that they might actually like each other. Each woman has their own issue to deal with - surly daughters, affairs, demanding families and overwhelming careers. The book follows each woman through their journeys, but the core of the book is how the women develop friendships with each other and with the other parents at the school. Frankel gets to the heart of female relationships, but it never feels forced. It's a surprisingly good read with engaging but delightfully flawed characters.

I would recommend this book as a good beach read. The characters were easy to connect with, and while at some times they seemed unbearably annoying, in the end I really enjoyed their growth. This is definitely a book for women, and I think it would make a great book for friends to share or for bookclubs. ( )

Sex and the CIty meets the private school carpool lane in this novel of four diverse Brooklyn moms who meet monthly for poker and self-revelation. Unlike Carrie Bradshaw's friends, this group is mismatched, lending an authentic tone to the reality of Brooklyn's diverse neighborhoods. (90) ( )

Four women, nothing in common except their children attend the same school, are thrown together on a diversity committee. Over poker, they tell secrets tell stories and make friendships. Entertaining read, my favorite character was Robin, or maybe I just identified with her the most. I liked this book, it was an easy read but definitely in the woman's lit category which I do not read very much. ( )
