After Melody's wedding, the Ellsworths and Vincents accompany the young couple on the their tour of the continent. Jane and Vincent plan to separate from the party and travel to Murano to study with glassblowers there, but their ship is set upon by Barbary corsairs while en route. It is their good fortune that they are not enslaved, but they lose everything to the pirates and arrive in Murano destitute. Fortunately, one of the gentlemen from the ship is a local banker and arranges for a line of credit and a place to live. Relieved, the Vincents begin the work for which they have come to Italy. All is proceeding apace until a solicitor arrives at their house and charges them with illegal trespass. Jane and Vincent produce letters from their banking friend, but they are all forgeries, and worse, he has used their forged letters to clean out their funds in England. Now, Jane and Vincent owe money to a number of people in town and are forbidden from travel. They manage to find some small work, but it is obvious to both of them that this path will not maintain them for long. Instead, Vincent hatches a reckless plan to get their money back.… (plus d'informations)

The author promises historical Ocean's Eleven with magic and delivers. She does this while remaining true to her Glamourist Histories characters and setting. With a small twist of circumstances, the main characters Jane and Vincent are forced into position of, in the words of the book, 'no position'. They are without friends, family or resources and must rely on their own devices to survive.

Circumstances become twistier and twistier as the causes of their misfortunes are further revealed. Finally, with new found friends and allies they take action and the fun really begins (I'm trying not to reveal any of the plot, since that is what makes the story fun).

The tension and action hardly ever flag. The dialog, characters and setting all feel period-authentic. The heist is devious, well-contrived and well-delivered. There are spots where it pays to have read the previous books in the series. But this is not required to enjoy this one by itself. ( )

Vincent and Jane head to Italy, but on their way they are waylaid by pirates and left destitute! A friendly fellow passengers helps them out but not everything is as it seems, as glamour is not the only way to craft an illusion. ( )

This series continues to utterly delight me (when I'm not wringing my hands in worry over the adventures of Jane and Vincent) -- a heist! A con within a con! Lord Byron kicking it in Venice! Magic! And Jane finally learns some practical skills -- which add to her confidence as a practical and self reliant woman. More than anything else, I appreciated the thinking about what it would be like to have to rely on unreliable mail service to communicate with family, friends, or the bank -- an amazing limiting thing, life without a dependable mail service. I fear we may rediscover this to our detriment soon. ( )

"Will you … will you teach me to make bread?"
Sister Aquinata broke into the first smile Jane had seen from her. "I knew I liked you. Come. Get an apron." ( )

this series just gets better and better. this book series really rewards readers who do not mind waiting for stuff to happen to get a big payoff. I love Jane and Vincent and love the feminist and class discussions in this book. Im so sad the next book is the last one. ( )
