Fiction. Literature. Mystery. Thriller. HTML:??Little Face is a wonderful work, a brilliant use of mirrors and the writer's magic.  Chilling, tantalizing, and ultimately fair and deeply satisfying.???Barbara D??Amato, author of Death of a Thousand Cuts
??Hannah adapts to crime fiction with arresting aplomb: Her characters are vivid, the novel??s challenging double narrative is handled with flair, and its denouement is ingenious.???The Sunday Times (London)
??Outstandingly chilling.???The Spectator
??Superb . . . good, old-fashioned spine-tingling stuff, but also a fine modern thriller.???The Times (London)
??A terrifying mystery of manipulation, counter-manipulation and, finally, astounding revelation. It??s a haunting story told with bewitching skill.???The Scotsman
??Impressive.???The Mail on Sunday
The first time she goes out after their daughter is born, Alice leaves the two-week-old infant at home with her husband, David. When she returns two hours later, she insists that the baby in the crib is not her child. Despite her apparent distress, David is adamant that she is wrong.
The police are called to the scene. Detective Constable Simon Waterhouse is sympathetic, but he doubts Alice??s story. His superior, Sergeant Charlie Zailer, thinks Alice must be suffering from some sort of delusion brought on by postpartum depression. With an increasingly hostile and menacing David swearing she must either be mad or lying, how can Alice make the police believe her before it??s too late?
Sophie Hannah is an award-winning and best-selling poet in the United Kingdom. She has also previously published fiction. This is her first psychological crime

Can't Let Go par Jane Hill (QueenOfDenmark)
QueenOfDenmark: Fans of Sophie Hannah would be well recommended to try Can't Let Go by Jane Hill and I am sure most would compare Hill's book favourably and in many cases think it the better book even. Similar styles of writing but Hill has mastered in one book what sometimes eludes Hannah.… (plus d'informations)

GirlMisanthrope: Also has a great twist and an unreliable narrator. Brilliant!

Really not sure what to think of this book. There's times when there were flashes of brilliance, and there were times when it was clunky as hell. Times when I loved the characters, times when I said, "Oh come on!" And I didn't really dig the ending. While I wasn't completely enamoured with this book, I'd definitely give Hannah another chance, as I'm hoping this was just growing pains for a new author. ( )

Keeps you wondering throughout is it her baby or isn't it? When you get to the end you do wonder what all that elaborate plot was about - what is the motivation after all? And who cares? ( )

I love Sophie Hannah's writing, her descriptive style and nuanced characterizations. But this first book in this ongoing detective series has me mightily conflicted. The lead character, Alice Fancourt, who reluctantly leaves her newborn for the first time and returns home from her errand to exclaim that her baby has been switched for another, becomes an enigma in this story's telling. She ranges between desperate and demanding, then passively subject to sadistic treatment by her husband and apparent gas-lighting by her mother-in-law. Then as detectives stall in their investigation, Alice and the substitute baby disappear. The police are ambivalent in their investigation -- in turns believing of Alice's account and then dismissive of it. In addition, the tense relationship between detectives Simon and Charlie add to this complex plot. Finally Simon unravels the mystery, but in so doing we learn of another side to Alice and her lying and complicity in this claim of baby-snatching. Excellent writing, interesting premise, but confusing execution and head-scratching ending.. ( )
