At first I felt like this was at a lower level than the first book, but I was proved wrong yet again as I read on.

I won't say this series is flawless by any means, and there are certainly times when the writing may feel overbearing, but I think it's completely worth it. Ultimately, the story is fantastic and takes some unique risks that Lawrence pulls off quite convincingly.

Excited to read the next book, when it arrives. ( )

Okay so that was actually 10 stars.

Favorite Quote:

“The next words out of your mouth, priest, will be ‘Yes, Your Highness’ or you’ll be making a meal of this cane.” To his credit the priest hesitated, then said, “Yes, Your Highness.” I doubt he believed my lineage, but he sure as hell believed my culinary predictions. ( )

I am not rating this book for the simple reason of not finishing it. I like Grimdark a lot but for whatever reason this book did not connect with. I struggled with the first one and reluctantly picked this one up. I don't have to like your characters but you have to give me a reason to keep reading. I couldn't find any and decided to move on. I won't punish the book with a bad rating because I think the author can write. it just wasn't for me.

Same thoughts as I had in book one. But less violence toward women and a whole lot of really beautiful prose. Heavy on the philosophy and existential crisis, but no lack of action! I also love the time weave in this one... it's hard to get that right, but Lawrence did it beautifully here. It'll be interesting to see where Jorg ends up, so I'm on to the final installment! ( )

In genre reading I tend to look first to story or character, pushing aside the need for beautiful prose and clever structures. I want to be transported to another world, to experience the impossible. King of Thorns does this, but it also does so much more,
