Containing many of the search features and a similar interface to its parent version, General OneFile by Gale Cengage, this database has been scaled down to suit the needs of middle school users without decreasing the usability or value of content. The content includes access to articles and images from more than 300 periodicals, over a large variety of scholarly and non-scholarly topics, and is constantly updated. Each article ends with a citation, and lists which citation style (most are MLA) it's formatted in. The homepage also features popular articles and popular searches, promoting browsing as well as formal research. Search tips are included for each type of search, to help users decide whether a basic, advanced, or subject search is right for their needs, and Lexile reading levels accompany each article. An excellent tool for introducing students to research skills, appropriate sources, and citations. Highly recommended for grades 5-8. ( ) Intended for upper elementary through junior high students, the base page of the database is text-only, with some color in the background of the logo. This page provides quick links to a variety of searching options, including an advanced search, subject guide search, publication search, plus the basic search and a select group of popular links at the bottom of the page. The subject guide search, because it uses a more controlled vocabulary, provides an auto-complete listing after a few letters are typed in, while the publication guide also allows for browsing the magazines by title. Major problems arise, however, in the advanced search, as searches there may yield fewer results, when given the same parameters, than the other types of searching available. In addition to this issue, the articles rarely include the accompanying illustrations, even when the option to view with images is selected. Recommended for those looking for a non-fiction text database for middle school children. Ages 11-14. aucune critique | ajouter une critique
