A painter causes a scandal by (as we would say) photoshopping --painting the face of a local beauty on a version of Botticelli's Venus, implying an intimate relationship which did not exist --but the woman involved turns up dead. Dr. Mary Finney, a sturdy and smart medical missionary in he Congo, investigates. To me, this was the most interesting of Head's Finney series. ( ) A very beautiful and very naive woman disrupts an African town until and after her murder. Although the locale is the Belgian Congo and the protagonists are very American, the overall effect is rather like that of a Maigret novel. Good characters, believable plot, and one excellent comic scene (a string-quarter recital). I was surprised by the lack of piety in the missionaries, but I suspect the author was drawing on experience. The beautiful, blonde Liliane Morelli, naive and socially inept, scandalises the inhabitants of Leopoldville. Dr Mary Finney, her missionary friend Miss Emily, and the young supply clerk, Hooper, investigate Liliane's death. Exotic setting in the Belgian Congo, well-drawn eccentric characters, and entertaining dialogue make this well-plotted mystery a good read. aucune critique | ajouter une critique

When a Belgian beauty dies in the Congo, "sharp-eyed, sharp-tongued Dr. Mary Finney" is on the case in this "witty, well-written" mystery from 1950 (The New York Times). It doesn't take a lot to be the belle of the expat community in Leopoldville, a tiny outpost in the Belgian Congo. A pulse and a pair of pumps will do the trick. Liliane Morelli brought more than that to the party, but it apparently wasn't enough: She's still dead of what the doctor calls blackwater fever--though any idiot could tell you that mosquitoes were not to blame. One way or another, Liliane was just a little too fatale for her own good. Enter Dr. Mary Finney, the Miss Marple of the missionary brigade. She doesn't do a lot of praying, but her sleuthing skills are top-notch. Now she's looking into the young Mrs. Morelli's death, the so-called blackwater fever, and her much old husband who is somehow nowhere to be found. The more she looks, the more she sees the truth: Lots of people wanted Liliane. And a few others wanted her dead. Aucune description trouvée dans une bibliothèque |
