This book has an interesting plot, but the writing is mediocre. I did not finish reading it. ( )

Buck has just discovered something that scared the crap out of him at the Keisel steel factory. He tells Tommy the unbelievable story. Buck was scavenging tin to repair the leaky roof. But when he is there, a strange creature attacks him. Buck is bleeding badly, but decides that he has to go back and finish the creature. He doesn’t want it to attack other humans because he woke it up.

Tommy and Buck go back to where Buck was attacked and find the creature missing. They do find another creature that is three times the size of the one that attacked Buck. Tommy and Buck go for reinforcements then plan on cleaning out the Kiesel steel factory.

This is a really good novella. I loved the concept of the creatures, they remind me of the Moth Man. Great premises but I think there is room for growth on where these creatures came from and if anyone actually ran into them years prior.

Beyond that, I recommend this to anyone that likes horror, novella or not.

I received this novella for free from the Library Thing Early Reader program. ( )

So as the synopsis says, Buck goes to the abandoned steel works to steal some siding to use on his leaky roof. While there he cuts his hand pretty badly. The scent of his blood brings about this giant…bird, wait no, moth, wait…man? Who knows what it is, but it has a wingspan of like, nine feet. He barely makes it away and gets back into town.

His friend Tommy says they will go back together, along with a couple others. Allan, Tig, Tommy and Buck armor up and go after this thing. Little do they know, the monster Buck fought off has a momma. And she is much much larger. Think a wingspan more like thirty feet!!

For such a short story there was some really vivid imagery within. I completely felt like I was right on the outskirts of this little Alaskan town at an abandoned steel factory. It felt cold and sparse, and quite eerie. Then the Winter Moth shows its face, and it turns down right scary.

“We’re gonna need some help. And guns, lots of guns.”

This was a great little horror story. It quickened my pulse and the author really has a great way of explaining and painting the scenery for you. There is a bit of gore and gross, so be prepared. However it totally sets the scene for you, and completely lets you know – this is friggin serious!

I surely would recommend this to my friends who were into monster movies, those who liked a touch of horror into their fright. I look forward to reading more from the author! ( )

The following review is my personal opinion of the book. This review is not a paid review. To form your own opinion of this book please support the author and purchase your own copy of this book. Please be aware that this review may contain spoilers.

I love a good horror or thriller book. Something that is so out there that it has to be fiction not matter what. Something that will cause goosebumps and makes the hair stand up on your arms. Something that will make you wonder as you pass by a place similar to something in the book and make you think "Is it really possible?".

This book is not exception. It is one of those books that makes me think as I drive home from work and pass a few abandoned buildings. This book is based in an Alaskan town. In that town is an abandoned steel mill. Every town has building like this. Buildings that are no longer used and no other manufacture is willing to move into the place. Buildings that are old, dusty, crumbling in place and will make you think "It is the end of the world?". Buildings that have narrow passage ways, possible hidden doors, huge ceilings, catwalks, deep floor pits, conveyor chains that would carry items, unknown areas even to people that worked there. Buildings that makes a person wonder what happened and why they left. Building that makes a person want to go inside and see what it looks like. To walk around and wonder what products were made. How the product was manufactured.

So what better setting for a book like Bird of Prey than an old abandoned building. What is the bird you ask. Well that is something the author left up to the readers imagination. It can be any type of bird you want it to be. But he gave an excellent description to start with so just use your imagination and finish coming up with the rest.

Now what does this bird prey on? Human Blood! Why? Who knows that is the best part about reading and when the author has written such a book as to let the reader come up with the why of the plot. Why would a bird crave human blood. But then this bird is suppose to be extremely large. IT has a wing span of around 20 feet or more. But if you set and think all bird prey on smaller animals. So to a bird with a wing span that large we as humans would be the prey.

As stated in the description everything is at stake. No not just the small town but everything. Humans all over the world. Why you ask? Well, sorry that is something you will have to find out for yourself by reading the book.

The bunny's and I give this book 4 Carrots. ( )

When Buck Sanders tells his best friend something has to be killed he isn’t kidding! Taking all of his
friends along, armed and potentially one hell of a car wreck waiting to happen; they mount up and go
after the biggest bird Buck has ever seen. The boys have absolutely no idea of what’s waiting for them
but they’re about to find out.

Tommy has always taken Buck at his word. Alaska is a state that creates good friends – folks you can
rely on – and Tommy has always believed what he’s told by his favorite bar owner. Buck saw the
creature while looking for metal to fix his roof. When they get to the abandoned building, the boys are
amazed at all the rooms, corridors and messes they see and the scratching noises they hear –
everywhere. What finds them is the cause of the terror.

I may have just read Sci-Fi Channels newest movie! What a lot of terror in a short story. If you like chills
thrills, blood and guts this is your new book! Won’t take you long to read but the images will hang
around for awhile! ( )
