Part of the Poetry for Children series by The Child's World publisher, this rendition of Robert Louis Stevenson's classic poem is beautifully illustrated and easy for children to follow. The book begins, not with a title page, but with an intricate painting of a child asleep in a bed, surrounded by trees, flowers, birds and butterflies, with a sunset and stars appearing in the background. The colors are bright, with depth and shading, and they grab the reader's attention as soon as the book is opened.

Each page has only one line of the poem, which makes this a great read for children ages five through eight. However, the format doesn't get boring after several pages because the arrangement of text and illustration varies. The text is also positioned in a large white box, which makes it very clear and doesn't combine it with the illustrations, which would be difficult for anyone to read. The illustrations reflect the line featured on that page, and even the lighting is appropriate for the time of day being described. For example, the sun is setting over a farm field while the poem describes the sun going down at nightfall. The illustrations do take up most of the page and are quite detailed, which improves the chances of children wanting to read the story over again to discover new things they hadn't seen before. In the farm field scene the reader may not find all of the animals on the first readthrough; the second time they see the page they may notice the flowers in the foreground and the trees on the horizon.

This is also a great read-aloud book, despite its small overall size, because of the high ratio of illustration to text on each page. It is also an exemplary book for a classroom study of poetry because of the additional resources featured at the end of the book. The entire poem is shown on the second to last page, while the last page describes what exactly a poem is.
