A Convenient Hatred chronicles a very particular hatred through powerful stories that allow readers to see themselves in the tarnished mirror of history. It raises important questions about the consequences of our assumptions and beliefs and the ways we, as individuals and as members of a society, make distinctions between "us" and "them," right and wrong, good and evil. These questions are both universal and particular.… (plus d'informations)

A nice introduction for the general reader, judicious in tone and striking an effective balance between facts, anecdotes, and extended quotations. The authors trade depth of analysis for breadth of scope, covering the 2700 year period from the Babylonian Exile to today, ( )

This book was disturbing, of course, and eye-opening. To see the ways in which hatred persists and is used despite various tools of hatred having been debunked many times over is almost enough to pull one into despair. Yet, to see the examples of people coming together to help the world understand that it is as an individual, rather than by group stereotype, and each person must be judged (and that based on the "content of his character" rather than anything else), brings hope.

The audience appears to be senior high school level and, as such, it does an adequate job of delivering information. The lack of source material attribution concerning what could be (and reads as) opinion, however, is quite disturbing. For instance, it states that Jewish proselytizing was common but gives no historical benchmark. This is only one example of many such questionable statements. I found myself not trusting the content and spent a great deal of time searching for corroborating sources, sometimes found, other times not. That being said, the style and vocabulary makes the subject accessible to first-time explorers into the complexities of antisemitism. ( )
