Effective story of a Chinese teen in Hong Kong gradually discovering the facts of her family still in China, through the letters from her mother smuggled to her in a precious heirloom box. The characters are reasonably interesting (although functional stereotypes of teens) and the story is compelling. Excellent introduction to the horrors of Mao's Revolution, for a generation that did not experience them. Has an LDS subtext, because some of the incidents are based on the life of a Chinese member, one of the early converts in Hong Kong, but the story can stand on its own. ( ) This is an amazing book about China and the years during and after Mao-Tse-tungs reign. Chen Wen-shan was sent to live with her great uncle in Hong Kong. After receiving a Jade box with letters in it written by her mother of the horrors they suffered does her uncle finally talk about his life. Very moving book. I am so glad that I won this from Goodreads. aucune critique | ajouter une critique

Teenage Wen-shan was taken from her family home in mainland China during the Cultural Revolution to live with her great-uncle, a former general in the Chinese army who became one of the first converts to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Hong Kong. For ten years, Wen-shan has carried the sorrow of abandonment in her heart, with few memories of her life before. But at the death of Chairman Mao, Wen-shan receives a mysterious wooden box that reveals the fate of the family she has not heard from in more than a decade. Through the letters in the jade dragon box, Wen-shan and her great-uncle discover a bond between each other, their family, and the gospel of Jesus Christ.
