'Kim's story allows for no adornment. It is written in a mood of total austerity; and yet the passion of the book is perpetually beating up against its seemingly barren surface . . . I am deeply moved.' - Philip Roth During the early weeks of the Korean War, Captain Lee, a young South Korean officer, is ordered to investigate the kidnapping and mass murder of North Korean ministers by Communist forces. For propaganda purposes, the priests are declared martyrs, but-as he delves into the crime-Lee finds himself asking- What if they were not martyrs? Part thriller, part existential treatise, The Martyred was published to universal acclaim and became a National Book finalist, earning debut author Richard E. Wonderful book about the agonizing of an unbelieving priest who feels he needs to keep his flock believing, as their life on earth is so miserable.
(Reminiscent of Unamuno's story, St Emanual, the Good, Martyr) ( )

During the Korean War, a captain struggales to understand the Christian faith of the North Korean ministers in light of war's atrocities and the suffering of the people. He discovers that Rev. Shin has the same dilemma, which is what drives the minister to Xian acts and martyred selflessness. Terse, strong writing, appropriately militaristic (consumed by detail and schedule notations). Masculine writing and pov on Korean situtation, especially during withdrawal of democratic forces from Pyongyang. Some hints of political drama war.

“And openly I pledged my heart to the grave and suffering land, and often in the consecrated night, I promised to love her faithfully until death, unafraid, with her heavy burden of fatality, and never to despise a single one of her enigmas. Thus did I join myself to her with a mortal cord.”

To the memory of Albert Camus, whose insight into “a strange form of love” overcame for me the nihilism of the trenches and bunkers of Korea
