This is a really solid read-alike for [b:The Historian|10692|The Historian|Elizabeth Kostova|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1327867412s/10692.jpg|3061272], and while I think it holds definite appeal for teens, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to an adult looking for something to read. There's wonderful codes and research and historical context. For myself, I didn't enjoy the resolution at all, but that might just be my personal taste. ( ) I loved this book. It was a good old fashioned thriller. There were parts of it that were down right creepy scary but at the heart of The Book of Blood and Shadow was a great mystery. I am one of those people who normally picks out the murderer halfway through a book and spends the rest of the book confirming my suspicion. I can't remember the last time I was so tempted to flip to the end of a book and find out who the killer was. I spent three nights laying in bed forcing myself not to turn to those back pages and spoil the ending. This was the first book I read by Robin Wasserman. I recently saw her on a panel at the Decatur Book Festival and she was talking about her newest book The Waking Dark. She was claiming that it is a horror novel reminiscent of the old Stephen King novels. I have been wanting to read a horror novel recently. Maybe I'll be picking that one up soon. This book is basically the YA version of the Devinci Code. Ancient/really old puzzles and clues that lead to some mysterious prize? Check. 1 or more groups that hate each other and don't like the protagonist? Check. Crazy chases and deaths and sudden twists? Check. Over all, this book was well done, though I found myself getting more pulled into Elizabeth's letters as than anything else as the story wore on. I also admit that Max had me on his side for the longest time until Eli revealed the truth about him. Adriane turned out to be a really shitty person and friend, though I do feel slightly bad for her because she was the only person not connected to the scheme in a sinister way, but dragged along and used anyway. HTML:It was like a nightmare, but there was no waking up. When the night began, Nora had two best friends and an embarrassingly storybook one true love. When it ended, she had nothing but blood on her hands and an echoing scream that stopped only when the tranquilizers pierced her veins and left her in the merciful dark. But the next morning, it was all still true: Chris was dead. His girlfriend Adriane, Nora's best friend, was catatonic. And Max, Nora's sweet, smart, soft-spoken Prince Charming, was gone. He was alsoâ??according to the police, according to her parents, according to everyoneâ??a murderer. Desperate to prove his innocence, Nora follows the trail of blood, no matter where it leads. It ultimately brings her to the ancient streets of Prague, where she is drawn into a dark web of secret societies and shadowy conspirators, all driven by a mad desire to possess something that might not even exist.
