"A Heart So White" is a breathtaking novel about family secrets, winner of the 1997 Dublin IMPAC Prize for the best novel published worldwide in English, and arguably Javier Marias's masterpiece. Javier Marias's "A Heart So White" chronicles with unnerving insistence the relentless power of the past. Juan knows little of the interior life of his father Ranz; but when Juan marries, he begins to consider the past anew, and begins to ponder what he doesn't really want to know. Secrecyits possible convenience, its price, and even its civilityhovers throughout the novel. "A Heart So White" becomes a sort of anti-detective story of human nature. Intrigue; the sins of the father; the fraudulent and the genuine; marriage and strange repetitions of violence: Marias elegantly sends shafts of inquisitory light into shadows and on to the costs of ambivalence. Tous les thèmes chers à l'auteur y sont présents et le titre est une nouvelle fois une référence à une oeuvre de Shakespeare. Nous quittons Richard III auquel se référait 'Demain dans la bataille, pense à moi' pour arriver à Macbeth, à la scène où celui-ci revient chez Lady Macbeth, au coeur si blanc, lui raconter qu'il vient de tuer Duncan.
Le livre débute par le suicide d'une jeune mariée à son retour de voyage de noces, mais nous conte surtout l'histoire de Juan, le fils d'un mariage ultérieur de l'époux devenu veuf, qui est interprète et vient à son tour de se marier et en est angoissé. Cela permet à l'auteur moult digressions sur l'innocence, l'amour, jusqu'où est-on prêt à aller pour ce sentiment.
Tout y est donc et surtout, avant tout, le style de Marìas que, personnellement, j'adore. Un très très gros coup de coeur. ( )
