A New Yorker review of one the despicable "Star Wars" sequels offered, by way of Yoda, the single best line in all movie-reviewing ever: "Break me a fucking give." The New York Times review of this novel has its book-review equivalent: "No phrase goes unturned." Lucky for me that I like Carson's puns and furbelows, but I see and concede the reviewer's point.

I have a zillion highlights and notes to check but I'm having technical difficulties (I can't find my marginalia on the Kindle app or at Kindle/Amazon). I do want to go through my comments but I'm waiting for the paper book to arrive and for tech support to locate my file. Overall, holy shit this was a helluva ride and I loved it.

"Maybe building a cockamamie epic out of a maddening jumble of cultural and historical ephemera is the only way to really do justice to the American century in all its chaos and contradictions."
