This book shows a different culture that children could be interested in. Children can learn that math is everywhere and they can count things around them almost everyday. Not only is this a counting book this is also a cultural book about the Chinese. Children can learn about numbers but also a lot about the Chinese culture. The story line is filled with rhyming words so children can grasp. I would use this book in my classroom to introduce the chinese culture and also numbers. One is a Drummer: A Book of Numbers is a multicultural number book. It features a Chinese-American girl who is counting, using her environment as tool to do so. This book is a cute story that counts the numbers one through ten in a very interesting way. It utilizes rhyming, which young children are sure to enjoy. This would be a great book to use with Pre-K students to help them learn to count to ten. A sing-song book of numbers from one to ten. A girl counts the things throughout her day, from dragon boats to birthday candles. The book also includes short descriptions about some Chinese traditions. Classroom connection: This book could be used in a kindergarten classroom when teaching numbers. It could also be used in an elementary unit on china and their traditions (in addition to many other books). This would also be a fun book for older students to look at as a model for making their own counting books for younger students. aucune critique | ajouter une critique

HTML: This lively ebook shows that the world around us is filled with things to count. Three are the dim sum carts filled with yummy treats, eight are the candles on a birthday cake, and ten are the bamboo stalks growing in a garden. Many of the featured objects are Asian in origin, but all are universal in appeal. With brilliantly colored illustrations, an ear-pleasing text and an informative glossary, this truly multicultural book will make counting a fun part of every child's day! .Aucune description trouvée dans une bibliothèque |

* Features diverse characters: lots of Asian-looking characters, as you'd expect, but quite a few darker-skinned kids (as well as light-skinned Caucasians) are included in the festivities. A lot of the things pictured may take some explaining, even among kids of Asian descent, so I feel that it's more a book for showcasing Chinese culture than it is about counting, though there half of the pictures will be universally recognized (9 kids playing in the sprinklers, 8 eating birthday cake, 6 on a merry-go-round.
* Suitable for preschool storytime. Too much for toddlers, but preschool-Kindergarten, sure. This might be a good one for when you're looking for Lunar New Year books. It could also work for the "counting" theme, since the objects are colorful and mostly large enough to be countable by the crowd. ( )
