This sequel to The Prize provides a narrative of global energy, the principal engine of geopolitical and economic change. The author, an energy authority continues the riveting story begun in the book, The Prize, in this account of the quest for the energy the world needs, and the power and riches that come with it. He proves that energy is truly the engine of global political and economic change, as well as central to the battle over climate change. From the jammed streets of Beijing, the shores of the Caspian Sea, and the conflicts in the Mideast, to Capitol Hill and Silicon Valley, he takes us inside the decisions and choices that are shaping our future. Without understanding the realities of energy examined in this book, we may surrender our place at the helm of history. He tells the inside stories of the oil market, the rise of the "petrostate", the race to control the resources of the former Soviet empire, and the massive corporate mergers that transformed the oil landscape. He shows how the drama of oil, the struggle for access to it, the battle for control, the insecurity of supply, the consequences of its use, its impact on the global economy, and the geopolitics that dominate it-will continue to shape our world. He takes on the toughest questions-will we run out of oil, and are China and the United States destined to conflict over oil? He also reveals the surprising and turbulent history of nuclear, coal, electricity, and natural gas. He investigates the "rebirth of renewables", biofuels and wind, as well as solar energy, which venture capitalists are betting will be "the next big thing" for meeting the needs of a growing world economy. He makes clear why understanding this greening landscape and its future role are crucial. He further brings climate change into unique perspective by offering an original and unprecedented history of how the issue went from concerning a handful of scientists, terrified of a new Ice Age, to one of the overarching issues of our times. This book presents an extraordinary range of characters and a panorama of dramatic stories that illustrate the principles that will shape a robust and flexible energy security system for the decades to come.… (plus d'informations)

Ótrúlega víðfem og vel skrifuð lýsing á orkubirgðum okkar. Hvernig þær hafa verið nýttar, staðan í dag og framtíðarsýn. Deilur um öryggi og barátta ríkja og fyrirtækja við að tryggja sér auðlindir og tækni við að nýta þær eru gerð góð skil auk náttúrusjónarmiða. ( )

There are books written periodically with titles such as "Everything you needed to know about ...". And most books of that type cover a lot of the general knowledge people might be most interested in about the subject. Howver Yergins book doesn't just cover most of the topics about Energy, he covers it all. This is a most thorough book, extensively covering not just petroleum, but renewables, transportation energy, electrical power in all its various types, carbon, discussions on climatic effects, etc., as well as a look to the future. I didn't think I'd finish the book, given its length, but found it easy to continue, as new topics continued to bring new information and new interest. This could be a full semester course on energy for some secondary schools. I found it informative, and believe it would also be very informative for all citizens. ( )

Book. RLS library gives away lots of books for political education. This book is missing a description. Write a description of about 150 words and you can take it or a random book home. OR, you can exchange 2 books for 3 random books of ours. ( )

This book is a primer on every aspect of today's energy industry. That's it. Nothing more, nothing less.

So, it's huge, high level and comprehensive. Who knew that energy conservation (one of the 60 odd chapters) could be so interesting.

However, I found a number of simple errors and biases. One was about
- "Iran" trying to "surround its neighbours"
- fear mongering about Iran *completely* ignoring Pakistan.
- spending many pages *supporting* the Iraq WMD claims!
- claiming that the US ambassador to Iraq said that the USA would never accept a non-diplomatic solution to Iraq's Kuwait problem, which is an out and out lie
- cites Laura Bush as an authority
- talks about Iraq being responsible for 9/11
- re Al Queada & Saddam : "There could be cooperation in the future".

Overall, great as a primer, useless as any source of deep information. ( )

The Quest is a study of energy policy and its implications in international politics and economics. But first of all, I think it would be useful to make a short introduction of the author of the book, Daniel Yergin. Time magazine said – if there is one person whose opinion matters more than any other on global energy markets, it’s Daniel Yergin. The New York Times described him as America’s most influential energy pundit. Fortune said that he is one of the planet’s foremost thinkers about energy and its implications. He is known around the world for his book, The Prize, the epic quest for oil, money and power, which was awarded the Pulitzer Prize.

The Quest covers the whole spectrum from conventional energy, oil natural gas, electric power, climate change, the new energy solar renewables, the electric cars and tries to look at them all in perspective and see if they could be put all together. The book is about three major questions about energy today. The first is the question about growth and about cycles where we’re running out of energy and where we have an abundance of energy. Today there is more confidence in the physical supply, but, on the other hand, we know that there’s a challenge in the economic growth of the emerging markets. Yergin believes that around two decades from now the world would be using somewhere between thirty and forty per cent more energy, so the big question is how’s that going to be achieved and what’s that’s going to be.

The second big question is – is energy secure? The book tells that energy security and the traditional issues of energy security are still very much on the agenda as a few decades ago. It’s the confrontation and the standoff with Iran as well as turmoil in the whole Middle East, but they’re three new dimensions to it. Physical security in terms of terrorism. The second aspect is...
