I don't think this book even desreves an ok because it was very predictable and boring. I only bothered to finish it because it was about 150 pages. ( )

Citation: McWillimas, K. Doormat (2004). Delacorte Press: New York.
Grade Levels: 6th-10th grade.
Genre: Teenage pregnancy, realistic fiction.
Read Alouds:
This book is set up in very small chapters centered around one word. Some chapters are titled Model or Cow. I believe this would be an appropriate novel to read as a class for homework, but rather as a supplement split each chapter among students to have presentations of people, places, and activities.
Summary:
The uphill battle of teenage pregnancy and its effects on the young body. The friendships and family and also all your hopes and dreams. Melissa findsout she is pregnant and wants Jaime to save the world. One small problem: Jamie is sick of being the devoted doormat to Melissa. Melissa is forced to make life-changing decisions with or without her BFF.
Theme:
Choices make or break you.
Discussion Questions:
1. Why do you believe books and the media beautify teen pregnancy?
2. The author was 15 when she wrote the novel in 2004. The teen pregnancy rate was 1/2 what it is now. Name and discuss other contributions to this increase.
Reader Response:
I thought this book was going to be the breath of fresh air I need with all of this teen pregnancy hoopla, but I was wrong. It was once again beautified. Why can’t we show the youth that IT’S NOT OKAY! I am sick of seeing Jamie Lynn Spears on the covers of magazines talking about how being a mom is so great. This book did the same thing. ( )
