The photos are of locations illustrating the scenes in Scott's poem. Each one is original, tipped in. An early example of using photos for book illustration. Front and back cover is highly worked leather, embossed in gold.

A genuinely effective story though I must admit I skip the lengthy introductions to each section describing Sxcottish scenery. "Young Lochinvar" and "the hand of Douglas is his own" are great bits, as is Wilton's defiance of the ghostly herald's summons. ( )

David Bryce & Sons Tartan Series #35. Printed at the University Press in Glasgow. Silk tartan cover is tattered and now has a protective marbled paper book cover. Pagination does not begin with page one and page numbering on illustrations is out of sequence. Printer's mark on last page bears date "MCMVIII".
