The story is about a boy Neftali, or Pablo Neruda, who loved to read and wrote poems about the things he loved. He also also wrote poems for workers that struggled for freedom. The book also has a good message about pursuing justice and what you love. I would recommend this book and it would be great for 1st graders to read. ( )

This is a creatively illustrated biography of Pablo Neruda, Chilean poet and Nobel Prize winner, whose poems about people, nature, justice, and freedom earned him in - ternational acclaim

This book follows the true story of Neftali Basoalto, better known as Pablo Naruda, a Chilean poet who used his work to fight for his people's rights. The poet wrote about everything he saw, but he was most famous for his poems speaking out against the terrible working conditions for coal miner's in Chile. This story follows Pablo from childhood through his adult years. The book would be amazing to show the diverse origins, topics, purposes, and styles of poets in an English classroom. It could also be used to show the impact literature and art forms have on sociopolitical movements. ( )

I really enjoyed this book. I think it gave a good summary of who Pablo Neruda is, and it had really unique illustrations. I liked all of the words in the illustrations, it made me feel as if I was taking a look inside of Neruda's brain and seeing his creativity flow. I liked his story so much that it inspired me to learn more about the poet, and I think that the kids would feel the same. The illustrations drew me in automatically, and I imagine the same effect on students. ( )

I love that Pablo Neruda always wrote with a green pen. Such a small detail but a wonderful edition to the narrative and a simple explanation given of how he loved nature and honored it always. I like what I learned from the text but don't think it was as cohesive or had the rhythm and flow I would expect of someone writing about a great poet like Neruda. she did explain complex topics simply and easy to digest for younger audiences. The illustrations are what capture the book for me- I especially love the details of the Spanish written throughout the illustrations, integrated into different images. ( )
