I guess this was good but creepy murder books are really not my cup of tea.

Somebody must have recommended this to me ages ago as it was the oldest book on my kindle. I was interested enough to keep reading after I started but I didn’t not fall in love with this character enough to want to keep going with her in future books. ( )

Read as part of The Readers (podcast) summer book club. Excellent plot twist that kept on giving and kept me guessing. For a while I was wondering what the hell was going on. Will definitely read another one by Bolton. Can't say much without giving away spoilers and I'd hate to do that with this one. Not for the faint of heart, extreme violence against women. ( )

What a ride this was. Nothing is as it seems, it seems, or is it?

Lacey Flint seems to be a dedicated and caring cop, until people (including us) suspect her of being the very killer they are chasing. But she still seems to care about catching the killer, and we're not sure whether it's part of the act, or she's not the killer. The answers finally come at the end, and it wasn't anything I expected. Only Lacey knew what was going on. All I can say is she's a strange woman. I'll probably have to read more of the series to see what happens from here. ( )

I think my expectations for this book was way too high. I mean I liked the book, it was well-written, had interesting characters and the story was good with some nice twists. But I just never really got "into" the story, sure the Jack the Ripper copycat story was good and I liked that Lacey Flint had some really dark secrets that she really needed to keep away from the Met. I also liked Detective Inspector Dana Tulloch and Mark Joesbury. I especially liked the love-hate relationship between Lacey and Mark. I just wish the story had been more intense. I never had the "OMG what is going to happen next feeling" while I read the book. Not even at the end.

But the ending as good despite the lack of real intensity. I liked the revelations and I want to know more about Lacey Flint so when I have time will I definitely read the next book. ( )

Detective Constable Lacey Flint finds a dying woman with her throat slit. Flint's day job is investigating crimes against women, but when a local reporter gets a note linking the woman's murder to the famous Jack the Ripper killings in Victorian-era London, Flint's detailed knowledge of them brings her into the investigation, despite her witness status. And, the killer is leaving special personal clues for her, making her a possible suspect. This time though, the victims are not destitute prostitutes, but wealthy women. About halfway through, they catch the killer, who drowns in the Thames, who claims he was set up. When the killings continue, the police find the common thread between the victims, leading to a highly implausible ending. The book is very dark, and while I will read another in the series, I did not particularly care for Flint nor the attractive male detective, trying to protect her. ( )
