"Photography, a cultural history" is wat de titel belooft, een geschiedenis van de fotografie met veel aandacht voor culturele aspecten. Zoals wel meer overzichtswerken heeft dit boek als nadeel dat de schrijver ervan teveel probeert te behandelen. Daardoor komen ontzettend veel namen voor in het boek, waarvan de meeste niet eens een foto krijgen, terwijl van de echt belangrijke fotografen ( denk bijvoorbeeld aan Henri Cartier-Bresson) slechts een of twee foto's in het boek staan met misschien een halve bladzijde tekst. Ook is het boek in vrij moeilijk Engels geschreven en tamelijk saai. Zeker niet oninteressant, maar kijk bijvoorbeeld naar "The photobook, a history *****" van Martin Parr om te zien hoe het veel beter kan. (
