I loved "The Secret Box." Without having any words, it takes readers on an adventure through time, requiring a bit of imagination and even a little bit of map reading. As the children discover the secret box, they are brought back in time. I liked that the illustrations made it easy to differentiate between past and present. For example, the illustrations set in the past were more brown and dull in color, while the illustrations set in the present were more bright and vibrant. This made it completely clear that the children had found a box that someone from the past had hidden--the story was easy to follow. I also think this is a story that is relatable for many children. Once the children find the box, they can't help but allow their curiousity to take charge, going on an adventure to find the locations from the pictures in the box. Children are very curious and love to go on adventures! I also liked that the book naturally featured a diverse range of characters. There were, for example, characters of many different skin colors. I highly recommend this book! ( )

Barbara Lehman did a really good job with this book. No word were needed and it was fun to be able to follow the pictures to see what happened in the story. ( )

The Secret Box is a wordless picture book that demonstrates the concept of time. I give this book a 5/5 because students can easily differentiate the pictures that represent the past and present by viewing the colors of the pictures. The pictures that represent the past are different shades of brown, while the pictures that represent the present are more vibrant colors. The use of different colors to represent different periods of time helps students understand the plot of the story which is a group of kids finding a hidden box of pictures that represent the memories of someone from the past. Additionally, students can relate to the curiosity that the children in the wordless picture book express. Once the group of children in the book find the hidden box with pictures from the past, they go on an exploration to find the locations that are in the pictures. They get to see if the locations in the pictures have changed or remained the same. Students are constantly exploring new ideas and concepts on a daily basis because their curiosity drives them to find answers. ( )

Before reading this book, I had no idea that books like this existed. I think wordless books for children who can't read open this amazing door for them. For a child who can't read yet they can look at these pictures and tell their own story using their imagination from looking at the pictures. The same thing happens when children who can read, read this book. ( )

This book is full of adventure and fun. The characters come to life through their curiosity in the items through the box. They used their critical thinking skills in order to problem solve. The group of children followed the map in order to find the ancient building. This book depicts that some things change over time and historic buildings are preserved. Nothing stays the same. Once the children reached their destination they compared the pictures from the box years ago and the present day building. They noticed the new additions around the old building proving change over time. ( )
